About the time ammo dried up I purchased a .45 1911. Up until today I was wondering what the hell you folks were taking about as far as failures while firing. Well today I experienced it. So far I have 200 rounds thru it give or take. Today was probably 75-100 rounds and I have 2 FTE and one feeding issue. The ftf was probably limp wristed w/wilson cambat mag. The fte's was with an elcheapo mag.

Do I need to replace this gun as the bedroom drawer gun with one of my 9's?
I love to shoot the 45 but is it dependable enough to depend on? I'm not talking sell it or anything like that because I really like it. And i'm not talking which caliber is better for what and yes I have several sg's for home defense. But i've never had a failure with any of my .9mm's and already had 3 in 200 rounds with my 45. I think I just answered my own question. lol

I would put more rounds through it -- 1 failure due to OE (operator error) the limp wristing, and the other a bad mag. I only use Wilson mags in my 1911s and they run reliably
good luck

I have a safari arms I don't know the model. I have yet to find another like it or anyone who knows about them.

I don't know if it was the mag. I just listed the mags for more info. Those two were fte's. Ejection doesn't seem like a mag problem.

Probably just needs a good cleaning, and the extractor tuned. The extractor could also be damaged from someone letting the slide slam home on a round in the chamber.

The gun's designed for the cartridge to slide up under the extractor hook as a round is stripped off the mag. If the hook is forced to "jump" over a cartridge rim, it can damage the hook.

If it's a Kimber it will need to break in for a bit, mine jammed a lot when I first got it now it's pretty good but then again I started using better magazines so I can't really say.

i never had my kimber jam while i was breaking it in and i used stock magazines up until about a month ago when i found wilson combats on sale for 25 and they are 100% as well but he said his is a safari arms anyway which if i recall correctly is a fairly nice gun for the money. my uncle is a LEO and he loves the 1911 design he carries one daily, owns several, and has custom built one once the thing was the spring he used was probably around 18-20 pounds of compression but the standard for 230 gr hardball is about 16 pounds before he fixed it he experienced a stovepipe failures quite a bit but after it fired flawlessly. check your springs tension and if it isn't too great for your loads then i suggest you get your smith to check the extractor....dont give up on your 45 it is the best HD round out there....heres a link to a thread about this same kind of problem http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=184620

Safari Arms is definitely one that you don't hear much about these days. If you say the gun's been thoroughly cleaned, then my best guess would be that it needs a little fine tuning with the extractor. I've shot a lot of lower end 1911s with the cheapest ammo possible and I've never had 2 failures in outting. And since it was an FTE and not an FTF, my call would be to check the extractor since you say the gun was clean.

I really like the finger divider deal on the grip of the Safaris. Does yours have that also?

Maybe you should post some pictures of it! Not really for any technical purposes....I'd just like to see it! :D

There should be a sticky around here somewhere about how to post pictures. But the way I do it is to go to www.photobucket.com and create an account, it's free. You upload your pictures to the photobucket site. Once they're uploaded, it gives you the option to IMG code as an option and you just select the whole IMG filename and paste it on here.

shiftyer1 , I am so sorry you got stuck with that terrible ugly and dangerous Safari Arms ; but since you are a brother-in-arms and this is the High Road, I will take it off your hands just cause I like you.....ha.....great guns, just hold it tight and use good magazines, you will love it

I was mostly concerned because of three failures in very short period of time. Also krs I actually think mine is pre olympic arms. It's not similar to what I see offered.

Tonite i'll try to post pics.

I don't remember the OP saying anything about FTFs. I thought he mentioned FTEs.

So far I have 200 rounds thru it give or take.

Your pistol needs more breaking-in time. Tell us how it performs after 500-1000 rounds.

You admit that it may have been limp-wristing and cheapo magazine as the culprits for the FTF & 2 FTE issues, so it really isn't fair to blame the pistol.

Keep shooting it, but until you have put through 500 (or better 1K) rounds, you may want to go back to 9mm just in case.

Until you're confident with it maybe you should stick w/ one of your 9's for HD.

Buy some Wilson 47d magazines and see if that helps with feeding / ejection issues.
