Hello - I am new here and just purchased a Savage LRPV in 22-250 with the 1 in 9 twist. I will be praririe dog hunting and wanted the faster twist to stablize some of the larger bullets. I will be trying some of the 75 gr Hornady and was looking for some starting points. I also hope with the larger bullet that I can still fill the case to 95% or so, but use some of the slower powders.

Any ideas or experience would be great.

I don't have a single reloading manual with fast-twist 22-250 data in it.

The Hornady #6 does include data for the 75 grain A-Max & BTHP, with a footnote that they will not stabilise in 1/10 or slower barrels.

Looks like IMR-4895, H-4350, and H-414 give the best velocity.

Rcmodel says there are some loads in the Hornady #6 guide. Does anyone have a #7 guide to see if the loads are in there? If I am going to buy a guide I would like to use the latest so the newer powders are included.

Thanks again.

75g bullets for prairie rats is way too big IMO. You want speed, not knock down power. Use your 1:9 for cyotes or small deer. Get a 1:12 or 1:14 twist, with a 40 or 50g bullet, for the prairie dogs. With big slow bullets, you won't get the humane, and spectacular, starburst explosions when you smack a rat. You'll only be punching a hole with 75 grainers.

I just got back from South Dakota and the only .224 bullet I use is a 75 Amax, 4 rifles from 223AI up to 22-250AI. The hits looked pretty impressive to me.

Before I re-chambered my 1-9 22-250 LRPV to 22-250AI I worked with Varget, RL-15 and I4985. For each of them the load that worked best was in the 32gr range. Your best may be different. The Hornady manual gives a max for RL-15 and I4895 around 33gr.

When we go PD hunting we like to focus on the shots in the 500 to 700 yard range. I don't want to shoot the 50gr and 55 gr at these distances. I want to try and use the 75 gr bullets with a BC of .435 for the longer shots. I know the smaller bullets will kill them at that range, but the bullets will start to tumble the poor BC means too much wind drift.

I am more than willing to buy the Hornady #6 reloader guide if someone can verify there are loads in it for the 75 grain bullets. I don't want to order them and pay $50 and find out the info is not there.

Thanks for the replys. I am going to purchase the Hornday# 7. I like the idea of using some of the slower powders and getting a 90%+ case fill.
