Just stopped by my LGS to pick us some ammo. They had a S&W model 66 with 4" barrel for sale. Upon intial examination it appears to be in very good condition. It has the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder holes. The grips are original target wood grips. Lockup seemed tight. They're asking $425. Is this pretty good?

I'd say YES, I got one in February of this year, 66-2, fired 5 times, .357, 4 " for $450 and my local gunsmith said it was almost new. I think you ill like it.

I'd buy it at that price. My LGS has a 66 with a 4" bbl and they want $599.:what: If it would have been $425, it would be home with me now.

first offer $400..........never pay the asking price without making an offer.

if the bore is clean, lock up tight and timing good, forcing cone and inside top strap in good condition............jump on it!!

Good price, great gun. Buy it. Just remember that you should not shoot 110 or 125 grain .357 magnums through the 66, stick with .38 special or 158 grain magnums. There is the possibility of cracking the forcing cone with the lighter rounds.

INSANE!, went back to my local LGS to do a more detailed inspection. Gun is almost perfect. Even the wood grips show no sign of wear. It's a 66-1. Top strap and forcing cone is perfect.
I then see the price has gone up to $550. The salesperson says that the price yesterday was too low. He told me that the owner is pretty much dying and cannot speak for himself. The person speaking in his behalf doesn't know much about the value of guns. He say's they "try to get the most for their customers". I also see that person has about 5 other guns on consignment. They all look very good to new. There's a model 651 with .22/22mag. cylinder for $800. I would say most of these guns have either been shot alittle or not at all.
I don't know if I want to pay $550 just because yesterday it was $425. Pisses me off!
Would you be upset? Is it worth $550 The sale guy said they won't be taking offers till after the gun show in Sept.

That old game. I ran into the same thing a while back when looking at a series 70 Colt 1911 that had the most beautiful blueing I have ever seen. I was told the price was $800. The next day the price was $1,000. They told me that they thought that it was priced too low at $800. I hate it when dealers do that. I wouldn't buy it just on principle, even if it was worth $550. I know that doesn't make much sense, but that's the way I am.

Still...............................If only.....................................

No, it's too high. Nice 66's weren't pulling those numbers unless 2.5" and only about a year ago at the peak. For a 4" I wouldn't be comfortable paying more than $450 right now. S&W prices are off the last year. He will still have it in Sept. unless someone decides to pay too much.

$425 was a steal for a 66-1. My 66-1 is near new condition and I paid just under $500 last Christmas. Had box and papers. They are getting hard to find in that condition. I've seen similar ones for well over $600 asking price this summer. Older S&W's have really gone up at me local shops this summer

I would buy it for $550.

That's the price of a Glock. You can buy Glocks all day but you can't find many perfect condition .357 K frames.

If it is really mint, I'd buy it for $550. Priced new S&W's lately?

Just sayin'...

Yep, I do so weekly. $550 would have been possible last summer, but not in the current market on average. I'd point to the very pretty gun above from glassman at $400 that prices aren't what they were a short while ago before the recession kicked in.

If anyone REALLY wants an excellent 66-1 2.5" for $550, you can pm. It has sat unsold in the classifieds for a few months now...

I think I'll just wait. If they still have it in a month then I know that $550 is too high here.
