Hey all. I'm upgrading a Taurus 85 to a S&W 642 this week, wanted to know what you all think about putting a tyler-t on it. Is it worth it? Does it help much?

If you have the standard Magna stocks, it helps immensely to prevent the gun twisting in your hand under recoil.

If you have over-size grips or rubber grips it probably won't help.
They do add nothing to the size, so are a benefit over big sticky rubber grips for CCW because they print less under your clothes.

Besides that, they are retro-cool!

Uh, unless that 642 had its standard grips replaced with old-fashioned grips, I don't think you can put a T-grip on it. The current factory issue grips fill up the same space that T-grips do.

If you want more gripping surface, you can add a finger with various aftermarket grips, or with the factory-style Model 60 rubber grips.

It gives you extra gripping space while allowing you to keep the thin profile factory grips. Best of both worlds, really. It produces a grip profile that's really unique. Having gone through dozens of alternate designs from the big Coke bottle grips to very thin 20's style things the T-grip is near perfection for DA wheelguns.

I put service grips on my 642. Then I added T-grips. They make the gun easier to shoot. It also gives it a nice rerto look.

As others have said they will not work with the stock grips.

You can still buy the old grips I belive they called them rope grips for the J-frames. When I got my 642 I try a few other grips since I did not like the grips that came on the weapon. Then I found a pair of the old grips in my part box that use to be on my old mod 60 which I sold a long time ago also found the tyler T so I put them on and been very happy ever since with the way the 642 handle if you get the old grips the T will fit and it a great set up for some.

be safe

thanks kjeff, been a long time since I read what they were called I got really close not bad for the few brain cells I have left.

BEFORE you order the T-Grip,

you must make sure that the two (L&R) wood grip panels are both FLUSH WITH THE FRONT METAL STRAP from the bottom of the grip up and around the inside radius of the inside grip strap to the trigger guard.

If the wood grip panels are set back at all, and not exactly flush with the forward strap, then the T-Grip will NOT PROPERLY FIT! Mine were set back about 1/64" OR LESS and the T-Grip I got had an unsightly space along most of one side of the T-Grip where it mates to the forward portion of L&R Wood Grip Panels.

Tyler states this on their web site, although you may not notice it, or you may not understand what they are referring to. I read it but didn't know what it meant, so I figured I would try the T-Grip anyway.

After receiving the T-Grip, and happy as a clam, I tried it, it didn't fit properly, so I called Tyler. The woman was very friendly, but she did confirm that the grip panels must be flush with the strap, from the bottom of the (butt) up around the inner curve and to the trigger guard.

You can either follow the instructions and this information, or try it for yourself in which case you will either need to send the T-Grip back for a refund, or somehow try to modify the T-Grip to fit (which appeared a nearly impossible task).

Another plus about the T-grip/service stock combo is that's it's less grabby on your cloths, or if you choose, the insides of your pocket.

And like everyone else as mentioned, this set-up gives your j-frame that uber-cool retro look.

Every picture tells a story.

Tyler T-Grip = $25
Jim Badger Custom = $100
(it's ok to have both) ;)

I much prefer the T-grip adapter with original factory grips. Doesn't add any bulk to the gun and it fills my hand nicely. The t-grip adapter lifts the gun under your middle finger and puts the gun where I want it to be high in my hand. Love them, can't live without them. I have tried all kinds of grips, I have a box full of them. I just keep coming back to this set up. This grip will not work with the rubber grips coming out of the factory now.
