I am going to try my hand at some subsonic, suppressed target shooting..A friend of mine mentioned a .300 Wisper. I want to do an AR type build with a SBR.. Anyone have any info on the characteristics of this type of setup??

I have a 16 in carbine in 300 whisper. Love it. The stamp will be here this month hopefully;)
If you go sbr get a pistol position gas port and all will be well.
Best tip I can give for this caliber is get a set of head space gauage (stoney creek?) for your micrometer to help with reloading . Would have saved me some time.

Do you have to use different magazines with the 300 Whisper or can you use the standard ones for a AR? I am thinking of getting a upper for mine in that as i Have a Contender in that caliber and thought it would be fun to have a rifle also.

Same mags as the ar15.
Not much higher to shoot and build versus a regular Ar15 if you do it yourself, in my experience. All parts are the same except the barrel.
If you plan on going quiet make sure that the gas port is in the pistol position. I would go with palladin machining if I did another barrel. Make sure that the twist is 1-8 if you want to go subsonic without baffle strikes.

I use 223 brass cut down with a dremel then trimmed in my case trimmer. Any 30 cal bullet will work. Give it a shot I love it.

As a bonus if you get a 30 cal can you can use it on all your other sub 30 cal guns also.

Good luck. Hope this helped.

Register your SBR build with BATF BEFORE you make an SBR. $200 transfer tax, paperwork, yada, yada. Check your local laws. You local classIII dealers can talk you through it. I have a .300 Whisper bolt action with 16.5" barrel. The .300 Whisper is the way to go when getting into centerfire suppression in a rifle.
