single action mouse guns make me nervous

I do not know what it is about SA pocket autos, but I just do not trust myself when fumbling around in my pocket in a high stress event to mess with a very small single action auto. Now a DAO is something I can get behind.

Problem being is that I really like the looks and feel of the sig P238 .380, but a hammer, safety and single action on a mouse gun? On the other hand I really like SA in full sized and sub compacts such as a Hi-power or 1911s.

what do you all think?

With a pocket holster there shouldn't be a problem. Also don't leave anything else in that pocket.

I always carried my .25 condition three. Yeah, it made me nervous. That was many years ago. Now days, the LCP and P3AT sorta make guns like that obsolete in more ways than trigger function.

That old .25 was striker fired with a safety. A hammer fired QUALITY gun I'd have more trust in. However, in a pocket, I do much, much, much prefer a DAO.

I carry my P238 cocked and locked (which is a relative term with this pistol) in a pocket holster. I keep it in my right front pocket and it doesn't worry me a bit.

Fumbling around with ANY type of gun in a pocket is a VERY BAD IDEA. You really need to get a proper holster that will allow you to get a secure grip very quickly without hunting for the gun. Don't be the next Plaxco.

That's why you carry the gun in a holster designed for pocket carry, which keeps it oriented grip up with the trigger covered. You also carry only the gun in that pocket.

The safety on my Sig P238 is very stiff and positive, moreso than any of my SA full-sized guns. It hasn't flicked on/off on me yet, and I really don't think it ever will, so long as I don't carry my keys or something in the same pocket.

Another thing; I've read that the weight of the sig trigger is comparable to the kahr or kel-tech (probably the LCP to, for that matter).

"Golden Loki" says a measured 8+ with the sig vs. a measured 7+ lbs with a kel-tech, FWIW.

Nobody seems to think anything of a 5.5-6 lb "DAO" striker-fired gun in a pocket holster. No reason to think that a similar (or heavier) weight trigger with a safety would be any worse a risk.

IMHO, of course.

carried a Colt Mustang 380 C&L with a pocket holster years ago........MUCH happier with the more modern options like the Kahr and Kels.

I have reservations, not so much with safety per se, but about my ability to wipe off a little safety or cock a little hammer under stress on a gun with a two-finger grip to start with.

I carry a Sig 238 in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster C&L everyday. The safety is VERY positive and the trigger is completely covered by VERY thick holster material. Nothing goes in that pocket, including my hand. It AIN'T gonna shoot unless the laws of physics change.

The sig safety, while very positive, comes off just fine when in the hand; very natural, IMHO.

Putting it back on when it's time to not be shooting anymore appears to require some serious dedication however. Something to consider, unless you plan to shoot to slide lock every time you pull it out.

Those Sig 238s are sweet. I would not hesitate to carry one in a similar holster.

Other than being nostalogic for the old Colt mustang I cannot understand why anyone would want one of these over an lcp. If you are going to do it I suggest condition two carry if possible.

get a Bersa

yea if I wanted a POS :D

jk, bersa is ok, but I already have a CZ-82 which is pretty much a better firearm in every single way for a sub compact compared to the bersa.

What I need is a mouse gun. The idea of the sig 238 is growing on me, but I might wait a little while before getting one.

I haven't seen one of these in person yet.

My preference (and it is personal preference) in these small guns is for single action. I carry in condition 2 with a Colt Mustang.

I've looked but have not found a dao gun that I can fire as well as I can a single action in a small gun. The heavy trigger pulls and small size work against me.

I have both and like both, but the Sig shoots much differently than the LCP. I carry the LCP because I don't want a manual safety on a pocketgun, the wife carries the P238 because it is much easier to shoot and she doesn't mind the safety.

The differences in weight and ergonomics make the P238 a much softer shooter than the LCP. The LCP shoots like one would expect of a plastic mousegun. It feels like it's trying to 'jump' out of your hand when you pull the trigger. Doesn't bother me all that much, but my wife can barely hang onto it when shooting one-handed. There's nothing "wrong" with it, it is just a VERY light pistol and there is some trade-off involved with that. The Sig, however, shoots much more like a 'real' gun. I remember how surprised I was when I shot the first few rounds out of it. It is downright pleasant to shoot. Much more controllabe, particularly in one-handed/rapid fire. The extra weight is a good trade-off, in my opinion, especially for shooters who might not spend the appropriate amount of time behind the trigger. I could see my wife firing the LCP one-handed and losing control of it, or at the very least being wildly inaccurate. The P238, however, inspires much more confidence. Therefore, she carries the P238 and I carry the LCP.

I love Rugers and will never sell my LCP... but unless the very slight difference in weight is that important to you, or you strongly prefer a mousegun with no safety (like me), it is hard to argue that it is in the same class as the P238. If the way the gun actually shoots is any consideration at all, then there is a good reason to choose the P238 over the LCP. Now, if someone makes a gun that carries like the LCP and shoots like the P238, I'm all ears!

Fumbling around for anything to use defensively is a mistake, whether it be gun or knife. It's not the gun's fault, but how you choose to carry it.

I am completely confident carrying

my Kahr PM9 in a DeSantis Nemisis holster in my front pocket. I carry nothing else in that pocket and have no problem extracting the gun from the holster and pocket. Although, I have never had to do so in a high stress situation. I practice regularly so the movement will hopefully by authomatic if required under high stress.
