I'm in the market for another shottie and have my mind set on a 590a1. I went to the gun store today and the guys showed me the spx. Its $200 more than a regular 590a1 with ghost rings (what I origanly wanted) and the only difference is a rail and ported barrel. Is it worth the $200?

Put it this way....if you owned the 590a1 right now, would you pay someone $200 to port the barrel?

My opinion? No, it's not worth it. Not even close.

i cant say if its worth it or not

think to yourself these questions
"will i replace the rear sight with any form of optic?"
"whats the price of a vang comp barrel for a 590 cost?"

personaly i have the basic 590 and im very pleased with it i can control recoil on my own so the ported barrel wouldnt justify 200 more

and i dont need optics so the rail isnt for me either (i dont even have the ghost ring sights)

Much better sights, ported, heaveier construction, steel trigger group and safety plus a M-9 bayonet that normally runs about $100.

The 590A1 already offers these features (vs. 590 "standard"). Hence, the SPX does not provide any further benefit in these categories.

Personally, the only benefit I see with the SPX is the added bayonet. Unless you intend on using such a feature, I dont think its worth the consideration (and the additional price). In addition, the sights may be a bit better...but with a SG, would these "improved" sights make much of a difference? Im dubious....

Frankly, I think going with a "usual/standard" 590A1 would be just fine (Id opt for a front bead sight only...less maintenance and optimal for HD use). If you need a bayonet...just add one later. In terms of the rail....those are a dime a dozen. A ported barrel? Is this truly necessary on a shotgun? I dont believe so.

a fool and his money are soon parted.

don't be the fool. the metal trigger guard, heavy barrel and metal safety button are what you need with the 590a1. the "spx" is the mall ninja designation that suddenly turns it from a mil-spec gun into a SuperTuffTerminatorGradeSHTFOhNO33333zzzz gun.
