Anybody know if this could be modified to fit the VZ58?

If it isn't made for the vz-58, probably not. There are quite a few forearms for the vz-58, and I believe Czechpoint is bringing in some more stuff from the Czech Republic, plus a new peep sight plus .223 version with 22lr adapter kit sometime early next year. Czech out thier webpage, they have almost every spare part you could possible think of.
Mako group also has a large stack of aftermarket furniture for the vz-58.

Would be a difficult choice to make, and I have been pondering both of these choices as well.

I will point out that the muzzle brake that comes on the SGL is not an easy thing to keep clean, IME. At least not in the AK74. The carbon residue that builds up inside that brake is very stubborn. If the SGL had a traditional slant brake or muzzle nut I might be more inclined to get that one. As it is, I like the low price, but that is offset some by the presence of that brake.

The CZ is a neat rifle technologically speaking. IIRC, many of the internal parts of the FCG are made of plastic, which puts me off some.

If the price were the same I'd choose the CZ offering, but...

Sigh.

I would say get the VZ58. Its a milled receiver and is supposedly lighter than a stamped AK

It is. I've handled the SA-58's the Czech SF uses, and they are a little lighter than an AK.

I voted VZ. There's more support for the AK, but I think the Czechs made the better rifle.

they both seem like really great rifles..my experience goes only so far as to handling them, but i liked the way the 58 felt a little better. plus, the SGL is illegal here in CT.

I'm sure you wont be disappointed with either, depending on the use they will get, but i would go with the 58

i'd be interested in hearing how the Vz 58 compares to the Valmet...which has usually been considered the top of the line in an AK 7.62x39mm

They are not better than a ar-15 that's for sure.

you would likely be correct when comparing surplus 7.62x39mm to 5.56x45mm ammo.

but as a combat arm, a good AK would be my choice over a good AR.

if both were chambered for 5.56x45mm, AK based designs...the Galil, FNC and Sig 556 come to mind...would likely be better than the AR too

vz58

last weekend doin a comparo between my mak90 and vz58 started at 25 yards, but then it rained so to be continued.

The VZ's are ALOT lighter. My buddy just picked up a Century build a couple of weekends ago. The rifle feels really nice, easy to shoulder and line up quickly, and the mags are superlight. I guess they are aluminum. The only thing I didn't like was the magazine release position. It was pretty awkward for me. Other than that, quality was above average for most ak's, defintely better than a Century AK. :D

Against a SGL? Same level of fit and finish. Remember though, this is a "quality" ak and a "bargain" VZ I'm comparing. I bet the gap opens up when you look at CZ.

My $.02
