Opinions on XD & XDM

I own approximately 50 handguns in various configurations, but my daily carry gun is an XD, either 9x19, 357 Sig or .45 acp. I own a total of 6 XD's, with the last one being an XD-M in 9x19. My favorite is my .45 acp XD, with the 357 Sig being right behind it.

They're good guns and fit my hand like they were made for it.

I don't have as many handguns as ReloaderFred, but I do have a significant number and my primary carry weapon is my XD-45 Service. I have a couple of thousand rounds through it without a hiccup. As a matter of fact, I have had friends with other .45 pistols that have had misfires; and when I put the round in my XD, it shoots them. One had four hits on the primer with no joy, I dropped it in my XD and 'bang!'

XDs are renowned for being reliable, and they are very popular handguns. It takes the best attributes of the Glock and the 1911 and combines them into what many (myself included) consider the best handgun around.

Oh, and I have a buddy with a .40 XDm; I've shot it and while there are attributes about it that are better than the original XD, since it doesn't come in .45 I am in no rush to get one. But if I were shopping for a 9mm I would highly consider it.

My XD40 has been reliable and accurate. The service model's handle isn't as concealable (on me) as I'd like, so I may end up with the sub-compact .40" or compact .45" at some point. A friend in Missouri got the XDM, but carries something smaller.

I see a lot of love for the XD's on the forum. My XD-40 service has been flawless from day 1. There are those who prefer other brands but it would be a dull world if we all liked the same thing. Also if you want more XD related info you could go over to www.xdtalk.com and take a look around.

I have a total of 5 XD's, 2 are XDm's... I love em. They work perfect every time, I think they are good looking. They take down easy and I like the trigger.

I guess I'll be the first to throw a picture up. I like my XDm in 9 a lot. I wasn't shooting particularly accurately with it, so I benched it and it turns out the problem was me. The gun is accurate.

I sent the slide away to get fiber optic sights installed (after I took this photo) because I can focus on them much more easily. No issues with the gun so far. It's a keeper.

What are some of your opinions? I really like my choices, but, am I missing out on some other hand guns that are significantly better?

Owning two XDs and an XD(M), I have to say I'm more than happy with them. My opinion regarding firearms out there as a whole are going to be well made. Glock, Springers, HK, S&W, Sig, etc. all have quality firearms these days. Stick with the majors and stay away from the Jennings, etc. and focus on features/comfort that suit YOU.

If you liked shooting the said firearms, don't even sweat thinking you'd miss out if you bought one for yourself. That XD won't let you down. The one thing I'd look into the future is a trigger job. Springfield Armory, Canyon Creek, Springfield Precision, etc. all provide great enhancements if you desire tweaking.

I have a xdm 9 and a xdm 40. Both great guns.

I'm on my 3rd XD, I was looking for one concealable on me. My current ccw is an XD40sc with w Crimson Trace mounted on it. I also have a 9mm barrel for it. The gun has been so reliable it's boring. Although I think it's a little bulky if a pistol gets boring it must be good.

All I have is 4 XD's and every one of them are great. (9,.357 sig, 40 and .45)

2 XD's here (XD9 and XD45). I also have other brands. I usually carry the XD9 though.


If the XD fits your hand and you shoot it well, go for it. If not, try some others. There are many wonderful handguns to choose from.

I own an XD-9 SC (XD 9mm sub-compact). I carry it frequently, it is reliable with any ammo I feed it, it is accurate, and easy to clean and maintain. I highly recommend the XD Series.

the xd's are talked about a lot on the forums actually, maybe not lately but i am always recomending them here, and there, and pretty often. personally i have been shooting, and training with the xd for years, and i love it. With over 17,000rds through it is hard to beat, accurate, and always reliable. it eat anything that i feed it.

the xdm is nice, however i prefer the "old" regular ole xd better. the capacity is nice on the "m" however it is too big for carry imho.

I have shot XDs and the XDm, and I prefer the XDm. I wish Springfield Armory would just replace the XD with XDms.

I have five XD's and one XD-M. I actually prefer the grip on the regular XD's to the rougher texture of the XD-M. I'm like Possum, I'd like to see the regular XD with the larger capacity magazine for concealed carry.

Agreed. I still think it's harder to conceal than some of the other major polymer subcompacts, but it's still a subcompact and pretty easy to hide.

XD's can be a little bit bulky however the XD9 and 40 have the same platform, pretty much the same size and weight which make the XD40 a plus

my first XD was a 45 liked it so much i carry a XDSC40 only because they dont have a xdsc45

I have a XD9 sub and a blackhawk Serpa holster for my CCW. I liked the Serpa for the finger lock/release. The XD holster was not a possitive lock. Could not make the Xd feel right when drawing. The sub with the 16 rd clip fits my hand just right. Tried the Glock and the XD and the XD "felt" at home..

Didn't like the XD's....

... Love the XDm's.


Have a two tone in .40 and a black one in 9mm. Haven't had a chance to shoot the 9 much yet, but if it performs like it's bigger brother I'll be very happy.

I wish Springfield Armory would just replace the XD with XDms.

What a great move the OP made choosing the XD as a first handgun. Most of us go thru a lot of coin trying to find that "right one".

I bought my first XDback when I was drinking the Kool-Aid, and my "perfection" brand didn't build a hi-cap 45 that my hands could wrap around. Then one day, my fun shop friend showed me the XD45 Tactical. WOW! 14rds of 45 and I can hold it! It actually feels right in my hand. Bought it. Shot it. Alot!

Fast foward a few years. I'm still shooting the G's in the lower calibers and the transition in grip angle between the XD and the others was getting old. Bye-Bye to a G22 and a G19. Time for more consistency. Three months ago, I bought a XD9sc and at the same time ordered an OD-XD45c Service model. The little XD9sc is everybit as accurate as my 19 was or more, and it feels great in my hand with the Pierce grip extension. Just like it's big brother, it has now been 100% since round #1.

This past week, the XD45c came in. I've only fired a couple of mags thru it at a sand pit, but small pine cones at 20-30 yds were no problem to bounce around.

Now I have a three piece set. A 3", a 4", and a 5" XD, chambered in my favorite calibers, the 9mm and the .45ACP.

Love my XD9. Just feels and looks right all around. I have found it to be very accurate even in my novice hands
