Firing a gun next to someones head indoors...

He shot a pistol in the kitchen next to his wifes ear, with a "blank" in it.

What an idiot. That moron is only a "gun owner" in the simplest sense of the word...he owns guns. Comparing him to the rest of us gun owners is like comparing a teenager who got a Camero for their birthday, express from Daddy's bank account, to a Baja racer...

Gun fired; no ear protection

This discussion is astounding! Has no one involved ever had a life? You all know the saying: If you can't stand the heat. . . . It always semed to me that an M-1 rifle fired a few feet from one might sound sort of loud but I've yet to see any of the hundreds of thousands GIs privilieged to fire it who was provided provided ear protection.

I was pretty good with the "finest battle implement ever devised." In fact I was the best I ever ran into in person. In 1947 my betters (you know, The Ones) decided I should travel stateside to Camp Perry and shoot it some more. But first I needed to brush up. So they handed my some hangar queen of a rifle and a few bandoleers and sent me to the 1st Cavalry range at Camp Drake a little outside Tokyo. I was permitted to spend a full day practicing at a Japanese army range. Well, those poor folks were getting bombed regularly for a good while, so they put the ranges underground (actually they "roofed" them and covered the whole mess with soil and vegetation). The roofs were reinforced concrete half cylinders stretching out for at least 200 meters with conventional butts to tend the targets and score.

I probably spent about 6 hours out there banging away; didn't even know there was ear protection. That was 60 years ago and I'm still enjoying my tinnitus and haven't seen a disability check either. But I'm not saying I was a tough guy, just ignorant. When I got back to my quarters some snippy 1st three grader told me to clean that finest implement. I handed it to him and told him he could clean it and I wasn't going camping in the ZI either. I think that's the last time I shot one of those, but they were nice.

What's at issue isn't “standing up for the gun owning community,” but the abuse of a woman by a guy who has anger issues. As astutely observed by others...

I suspect the idiot has found an efficient way to combine his two favorite activities: shooting his gun and abusing his wife.

The person who did this is ... a spouse abuser …

IMO, this woman needs a divorce.

Gatorbait, firing a weapon during training and firing a weapon during combat are two entirely different animals than what happened in the OP's incident. Yeah, we have all done some stupid things with guns (there was a thread about that...). In my youth I probably fired hundreds of thousands of .22LR rounds sans ear protection. However, that is nothing compared to the blatent disregard for safety protocol and good common sense related to us by the OP's story.

And yes, for your information, I have a life.
Has no one involved ever had a life?

IMO, it is morons like this that turn people anti-gun.

He should be ashamed of himself for a number of reasons.

Standing directly beside a discharging firearm is a good way to get hurt. Side blast from a revolver's flash gap and ejecting cases from a semi-auto are just two of them. The shooters should work out a system or protocol to prevent such occurrences.

If she asked you that question,"now that I read further down", then it stands to reason that there is something wrong with both of them, mentally". Him for doing it for any reason, and her for not understanding that it was a "violent" and illegal act, in the first place. Why is she telling you instead of the local authorities?

I'd really be interested in the context of the original question (the friend to the OP).
I would hope the question concerned the proximaty of folks while shooting at an indoor range (I want anyone with me between the 4 and 8 O'Clock positions...less worries about the gases escaping from a revolver cylinder (.44 Magnum can sting at 10 feet distance) or hot brass striking someone).

The more I think of this, the more it seems to qualify as an act of domestic violence. This could be enough to have Mr Wonderful's guns yanked, if she elected to testify against him. Probably couldn't be compelled to do so due to marital privilege, and might not be wise to do so at this time. Still...

The impulse control issues suggest a possible felony or mental illness history as well. Tell your friend that she needs to keep her eyes open, have an exit strategy, and stay solid with her support network. Make sure she understands that any more overt cruelty will not be something she can fix, and it will not get better. She may have to make some tough decisions.

This is abuse. In cases of abuse a spouse can testify against spouse, either sex but usually a wife against husband.

Almost every community has an organization to provide for abused women. If she doesn’t know of it a judge or DA can guide her, it doesn’t have to be a lawsuit for him to do this.

The problem, however, is many women will bring charges and then turn around and start defending her husband when the law clamps down. Weird world isn’t it?

Thanks for all of your replys guys, I dont really want to intrude on this ladies personal life any further by relating additional info.

I related the good comebacks and thoughts and she found it to be very helpfull and encouraging.

Thank you THR!

Yes, if this was done out of rage, she needs to do something and nip this issue in the bud RIGHT NOW. Domestic Violence will not get better without serious work (especially on his part, a desire to get better is a must) if at all.

I agree they both have problems .....

He's a moron for doing that to his wife, and she's a bigger moron for staying with him.

A non-gun person asked me today, if its normal for "gun people" to fire their weapons indoors, next to family members heads.

Yup... happens every day. Thats how I punish my kids when they are bad.:banghead:

I dont even know why someone would own a blank to be honest.

Frankly, I don't know why anyone would even own a gun at all. Or use a computer. Or walk outside when they don't have anywhere they have to go. Or own a car that's more than four wheels, an engine, and windshield.

All these freedoms are a major risk.

He's gonna kill her. Mark my words.

He shot a pistol in the kitchen next to his wifes ear, with a "blank" in it.

That's, um, loony. Next time he'll say "I thought it had a blank in it" - while that "justification" won't keep angry husband out of jail, he thinks it will mitigate the circumstances. maybe it will, maybe it won't. but she'll be just as dead.
