A non-gun person asked me today, if its normal for "gun people" to fire their weapons indoors, next to family members heads.

I ... was at a loss as to what to say, and was very embarressed for the entire gun community. Apparently she has had some recent experiance.. and hearing loss.

Is there... anything I can say to this person... to ... differentiate.. or .. whats the word.

How can I stand up for the gun owning community in relation to this incident.

I am at a loss.

I'd need more of a frame of reference for this one. But, I can see 2 basic scenarios If firing at an immediate threat fine better hearing loss than life loss. If doing something stupid then explain to them that no, that's not a gun person. That's an idiot with a gun. Entirely different species of people. Then maybe go into the 4 rules etc.

I think a simple "NO, only an idiot would do that for no good reason other than the shock value." would open the door to her dilemma

The other day, I was transporting a bulldozer. Total combination weight of about 110,000 lbs. Some jackass in a heavily customised Lexus SUV whips around me, cuts back right in front of them, then slams on their brakes to make that immediate right hand turn. If I hadn't been able to grab the left lane, I'd have decimated that Lexus, and they'd have ended up paying with their lives to save themselves ten seconds or so.
Blanket all "car people" as such for an example, and perhaps they'll realise how absurd it is to do the same to "gun people".

Tell her that whoever did that was an idiot, and that we're not all idiots.

Supposedly the gun owner has anger issues, racial issues and is a "Gun hoarder" per the relator of the story, and is very "proud" of his guns.

He shot a pistol in the kitchen next to his wifes ear, with a "blank" in it.

"On Purpose" not a ND.

She has suffered hearing loss as a result.

Thats all the story that I know. I cant even figure that out, but I told her thats not what "gun owners" do. I dont even know why someone would own a blank to be honest.

Thanks Seanie, I just told her that and I think thats a great response.

Thanks.

If that's the case, and she's not intelligent enough to differentiate the actions of a racist, uncontrollable wackjob from the entirety of civilization, let alone gun owners, then I'm not really sure what to tell her.

Not trying to be a smartass or a jerk, but come on...

I suspect the idiot has found an efficient way to combine his two favorite activities: shooting his gun and abusing his wife.

Way insufficient info.

It's an assault, and an argument could be made for battery as well, based upon the physical injury.

More importantly, it's an indicator of interesting times ahead and the need to plan for same.

I would have told him yes, if it's one of the gun wielder's alternatives to waterboarding!:neener:

IMO, this woman needs a divorce. And even then might not be safe. Perhaps you can get this woman interested in a personal defense weapon(s) and some training?

I have a question tho. If you shoot a blank...how far does it go? Is there a projectile fired from the barrel? Sorry, I dont know anything about blanks, except that at least their force can be deadly. I was wondering about other damage.

Firing a blank next to someone's ear is the same thing as hitting them in the ear with a fist. It was intended to cause pain. The person who did this is either a spouse abuser or mentally incompitent. In either case, they should not be allowed to own weapons. Just my $0.02 worth.

Bad news, in any situation.

A pal of mine (another IPSC shooter) would often go the indoor range with me at noon to practice. One day in 2003 he got in a hurry and went hot with his .38 Super before I had my ears on. Jerk. I haven't worked a day since, totally disabled by profound tinnitus.

Sux.

Harvey, IIRC, thats about what happened to Pres. Regan. Back in the '40s he was making a movie when an actor fired a blank gun by his ear. That's why he had to have a hearing aid. Sorry for your disablity.
