Used model 17's...

From gunbrokers about 9 months ago. Model 17-3 for a total of about $560 including shipping and FFL fees. Probably too high, but I did not want to wait and wanted a good one.

I've seen about a half a dozen nice ones in the last year. Appears that some folks were selling them to finance EBR's during the Obama buying spree.

I'd get one off the auction boards before I bought the hillary hole model. In fact if I couldn't find a nice pre lock 17, I'd just look harder. Good luck! TJ

This has been my experience on looking for them on gunbroker, etc, any chance I've had the presence of mind to poke about and check.

I traded a Spring Inc. M6 Scout survival gun with case and goodies, even up for my 17 several years ago.
Model 17s seem to bring $400-$600 on used gun market now

I passed on a shooter 17-3 that had bluing wear on the trigger guard and scratches up the barrel for $279. I also passed on a 17-3 that was mint with TH and TG for $450.

Both of these guns came up within the last 6 months and I'm still beating myself in the head over the latter. I bought a 1954 Colt Trooper this week, so I'll get over it.

I picked up mine last April. At that time, it seemed that K-22s were not that hard to find for less than $600. I figured I purchased as the prices were peaking following the election. I also much prefer the older models to the new revolvers.

I recently offered this good but not perfect 17-3 for $575 (with original Magna stocks rather than the Targets I added after buying it) including shipping but got no takers. Guess that was too much but it's a nice gun and I'm not so anxious to sell that I felt like taking less.

$500s seems about right for 3 screw K-22 / M17s these days. 4 and particularly 5 screw variants are going for $600s though. And the pre-war outdoorsman is approaching triple digits. In the end though, they are well worth it. SaxonPig, if I had the money I'd give you $575 for that beauty in a heartbeat. Actually, I am partly curious as to why you would ever part with such a fine example.

Makes me glad I picked up this 98% or so 1959 17-0 4 screw a few years ago for $430.

Heck, I'd be kicking myself over both of them, especially the $279 example if it was in solid mechanical shape. :banghead:

I hope you had some spent shells or snap caps in the chambers when you dry fired it. Rimfire .22s should not be dry fired without them. My K-22 is a 5 screw model from 1947 I think. I paid $525 for it about a year ago. I wouldn't sell it for twice that.

Wait and watch

I waited for months to anything nice that went for less than ~$500, until I lucked out last month and captured this on GB for $390 (shipped). It is solid, clean, and has no rust, but the blueing is worn on most of the high points (It spent too much time in that holster.) Far from "collectable" quality but I'll be shooting this for the rest of my life.

The LGS had a pre model 5 screw with the original diamond grips for $550. It looked like it went unused most of its life. There was a good chunk out of the base of one grip panel.

The only thing harder to find at a reasonable price than a model 17 is a model 18.

au2183m, I know what you mean! But I did find one last January for $500, a -4, ca 1982 manufacture. Nice piece, great little shooter, and very clean, it was obviously well cared for.

Actually, jhvaughan, I'm jealous!! That is a seriously nice 17, and it's nice somebody else took the value hit for you on the finish. I wish my 18 was a little less nice looking, as I am reluctant to holster it. (So I use my 19-5, which has much more holster wear than your 17, including some rust-freckling, but WOW!! Feed 'er 140gr Hornady XTPs and 2400 and it will punch groups I didn't know I could shoot! )

But last I was looking I would have expected to pay between $550-700 for the 17.
