Me and my friends are planning a trip up the ocalawaha river up to the saint johns and fishing and camping along the way some time in the near future(if I can get my grades up:eek:).from my experience on these lakes I know how aggressive these cottonmouths can be. I am only 16 and was wondering if their is a legal weapon i can carry to dispatch those little buggers when they mess with me. machetes don't work. I have wondered about one of those little naa revolvers with rat shot.

A Ruger Single Six would work with CCI Shot Shells -The NAA will work but the Single Six will be much more useful. Killed many rattlesankes with NAA .22 mag with shot shells. Now I use Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt with shot shells or Ruger SP101 .357 with shot shells. In the end the NAA is a fine gun but it is too much of a compromise for me.

You might ought'a check local laws before you go wandering the rivers at 16 years old with any gun. Because you could end up with far worse troubles than Cottonmouths and bad grades.

BTW, I've dispatched quite a few Copperheads and Water Moccasins with nothing more than a large hickory switch, so a gun is not an absolute necessity.

However, if a gun is what you insist on, the NAA would be a good choice, due to the fact it can be tucked out of the way, or hung around your neck on a lanyard, and not attract too much unwanted attention from any people or rangers you may meet while out fishing and camping.

I haven't dealt with those kinds of snakes. Can't say for sure. If I were going to get a .22 revolver, I'd get a stainless Ruger Bearcat: smaller than a Single Six, easier to hit with than an NAA (which I have). Personally, I carry my snake shot in a .38 J-frame -- but I haven't had to use it, and I really only carry it should I have to keep a snake from striking my dogs.

WRT the machete, do be aware of knife laws where you are. Sometimes you can get in more trouble carrying a machete than a pistol.

Imagine meeting up with one of those feral Anaconda's with an NAA Mini full of rat-shot!!

YOuser!!! :what:

PS: I don't know anything about your maturity level or handgun experiance at 16, or that of your friends of the same age group?
But you might be better off with a big old shovel to kill snakes then a handgun. It will come in handy for camping too.

In all honesty and and in my personal experience, a 6 foot pole/walking stick is not only more effective (it will really make short work of any snake within range), but cheaper, quiet, ricochet proof, multiuse, legal everywhere, available everywhere, and even disposable.

Sometimes even we gun people have to admit a gun is not the best tool for the job.

EDIT; Although shooting stuff is more fun ;)

Count me amongst those who are baffled by this "kill the snakes" nonsense that crops up on a regular basis. The best thing to do with snakes is to just walk around them!

Unless of course you grew up on a farm in Kansas.
And regularly had rattlesnakes in the cow barn.
And sunning themselves on the back porch steps.
And a neighbor who got bit on the leg when he got out of bed one morning.

Kill'm all and then walk around them!

While I agree with that about rattlers around the house / urban, most of the time, it's best and easier and quicker to just go around.....

Next, why is a kid asking the internet for guns to "kill snakes"

I would think that question would best be answered by his parents.
my $0.02, go buy a crossman bbgun and load 4-6 bbs at a medium pump, works well to give a decent spread, but be careful, those things bounce like crazy.

I've killed a couple of coiled rattlers with an NAA, head shots ain't hard from 10 feet. If it's movin', it's a might harder. I've hit a few on the move with an accurate .22 pistol, but it's a lot easier with a shotgun. :D

NAAs are VERY limited with CCI shot shells. My Rossi 511 is better. I know this from rats in the barn. My TC contender with .410 barrel is quite deadly to past 20 yards on a swimming snake. You could pick up a "super comanche" for such. They're cheap, but effective snake guns.

i would go with a airgun or slingshot, 45 shell case's and slug's make good slingshot ammo (so does fishing egg weights)
i shot a huge lizard (the black and blue slimy kind) with a 45 case, it tore him in half and i'm sure it would do the same to a snake.

I am the same way about the kill the snake matter unless we are talking about a 5 foot cottonmouth that wants to kill me. I tend to get real mad when people kill harmless rat snakes and racers.I already have my dads .357 mag to take care of the cottonmouths at the house and we keep a 22 with stingers and rat shot fore them at the marina.I was just wanting to know if it is even legal for me to have a pellet gun or anything in my boat even when I am out just fishing.

Ditto Bucksnort: Walk loudly and carry a big stick, but leave the snakes be. This is not a thread about firearms but about needless destruction and phobias about snakes. They have such a bad rap, kill vermin, and do us a service, and the unwitting kill any they see. I'm not a bunnyhugger but I only carry a pistol to ward off 2 legged predators. Hunting has a purpose, good sport and good for the species, good for the economy. Go on yor trip and leave the guns at home, you and your friends will survive, most venomous snake bites occur near human habitation, not in the wild, you have 2 chances of getting bitten by a snake... slim and none... unless you do something foolish.

Going out of one's way to kill wildlife without some other reason like hunting seems pointless. If you're really out in the middle of nowhere and the snake is not hanging around your house, just make a wide path around it and be done with it. You also may want to check your local laws regarding snakes. In many states, it is a crime to kill snakes, so you may want to think twice about it.

I'll say what I hope many are thinking.

Get your priorities straight.

Get your grades up and keep them up. It is the only important job you have.

There will be time for shooting, trips, and everything else later.

But if you fail at school it won't matter, you likely will never be able to afford or enjoy any of these pleasant pursuits.

I agree totally with you..............you need to get your grades up. Makes one wonder what Gov`t schools are teaching these days. :)

I'm not a really big fan of firearms, cramped situations, aluminum canoes, panic, and poisonous snakes. If a snake pops up suddenly, it's really easy to shoot the guy in front of you before you realize what you are doing, or shoot a hole in the bottom of the boat. Plus, if you turn over, it's really easy to lose your gun or get it wet. I like the old shovel idea, myself.

Heck a new shovel is cheap, sharpen the edge, even a swing at the snake will cut them. That said leave them alone if at all possible. Never killed a snake on purpose but have used a grain scoop shovel to kill many rats and mice shelling out corn cribs, used it like a giant flyswatter, believe me you do not want a mouse running up the inside of you pant leg headin for your crotch .

Just to answer your question and not lecture you - CCI 45acp shotshells work great and will cycle a 1911.

MH - always tuck your trousers into your boots.
