This is a dilemma.

My arms are short.

Waaay short.

I just picked up an 870 that had been modified for someone’s kid. It had a 11.3//4” LOP. I had to make some spacers for it, and now it fits me perfect with a 12 ½” pull. The LOP fits me perfect. Unfortunately, I still can’t reach the forearm well enough to operate the gun without aggravating my tennis elbow.

I plan to eventually put a folding stock on it (for specific reasons), but haven’t yet decided what to do about the forearm. I need something I can reach, and the current setup just won’t make it. I liked the feel of a drop down fore grip I picked up when at a local shop. I know the conventional wisdom is to avoid putting too many add-ons onto the gun, so I’m reluctant to do that. Problem is, it’s just feels more comfortable for me with the drop down grip.

I suppose I could put a full length forearm on it if I could find one, but am not to eager to do so because I’m not sure I like the idea of the loading port being covered when I rack it. Besides, I did like the feel of the drop down fore grip.

The intended purpose for this gun is kind of a jack of all trades HD/SD, car/home.

Any ideas and recommendations. I have a Winchester 120 for hunting that got cut down and I found a long forearm for. Just don’t know if that’s how I want to go with a dedicated fighting gun.

Buy a single break barrel or a side by side double. Forearm reach solved.

If the gun doesn't fit, bud, you aren't ever going to get it beyond simply passable. "Good enough" isn't really a good place to shoot for. It might be smart to look at something else that can fit. Have you considered one of those new Mossy super bantam mini's? 20ga 3+1 isn't a bad thing.

Then the gun does not fit you perfectly - try removing one of the spacers and see how it goes from there

While I like the looks of the police fore arm, I had always used the longer sporting ones as they fit me better. Who cares what it looks like, the important thing is that it fits and works for you.

If you are concerned about covering the loading port on the bottom, then cut a U shaped notch out of the bottom of the forearm.

Find yourself a synthetic field length forearm, and modify it by cutting away the bottom where it covers the loading port when fully retracted. The forearms on several guns are done that way from the factory, my BPS is that way. Round everything off, smooth it out and it should be no problem.

Just be careful not to get the heel of your hand pinched between the forearm and the bottom front of the receiver, it can happen with the LE length forearm you're using now too if you aren't careful. I've seen people draw blood doing that, and it looks like it hurts.

Just note that some folding stocks do not work with full-length forearms. My Knoxx Cop Stock is that way.

Thanks all. I think Lee's suggestion just might work.

jfruser, I have considered that. A friend has a Mossberg with the folding stock. We plan on getting me a range trip to observe if it works or not.
