I know, use the SEARCH function!
I am in the process of doing that on a few sites, but I thought a single thread might also be helpful.
I just decided I need an AK in my stable, preferably an under-folder. I want one with traditional style and wood furniture, no plastic. Any suggestions on good ones to look for or bad ones to avoid? Any versions with recurring issues?
Thanks.

all the underfolders on the market today are bad. The stocks eventually become wobbly.

What's your price-range?

my .02 cents from top of the line down

Krebs Custom-$900 to $1600
Arsenal ($700-1000)
Then you get your WASR's, Tantals, etc which are all hit or miss. If you get one of these it'd be nice to be able to inspect it before purchase.

If you can find a MAK-90 that'd be a good rifle to get, but good luck.

milled some will argue but in my mind they are more solid way to go than stamped. solid billet or bent sheet metal? which sounds better to you. they call them rattle boxes because rivets can rattle loose.

buy once cry once. you will be happier i think spending more in some cases lots more but have a better gun that will hold value alot longer

. . . if you iike paying for company nam¢$

Their marketing and sales practices make their products out to be something they're not.
I've been happy with my SGL-20. I can't say it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it's a quality build, and I guess the Izmash/Legion pedigree makes a difference to some folks. What do their marketing and sales practices make them out to be?

If you're in SE PA you may want to check out Surplus City in Feasterville. I heard they have a lot of WASRs (underfolders) plus the Yugo underfolders. At least there you could handle it and handle them before you decide.

I've heard different things about the Romy UFs... some say stocks wobble or feel cheap (when compared to Yugo or Polish). Some don't like lack of cheek weld. :uhoh:

I am SE PA as well- PM me if you want to talk shop further.

Wow, great info guys, although not all what I wanted to hear. I will read, search, and study more before I decide.
Thanks, Buck00, I'll probably take a ride out to Feasterville.

I've had a Vector for several years and it's been nothing but solid. Great shooter out to 200 yards, x39, Polish parts, chromed bore, double hook trigger, wood furniture, regular stock. It goes to the range alot. Stamped reciever too.. That has yet to rattle..

Thumbs up, if you can find one.

Another option, is one that was properly built from a parts kit.
If the thought of building one sounds overwhelming, there are gunsmiths that specialize in assembling kits.

I had a Romanian AK, and it was serviceable. I could easily put all shots on a 8.5x11" at 100 yards with the Mk1 eye-ball. The fore-grips wobbled a little, the wood didn't quite line up right, but it went Bang! Every single time.

I now have an Arsenal SGL21 (when they were on sale for $500), and I am very pleased. It weighs about 1/2lb less, stock fit is perfect, no rattle, no wobble. Makes head-shots at 100 yards all day long, and with a cool barrel, clean crown, and good ammo I can even decide which eye to put it into.

Unfortunately, price will be an issue. I think $500-ish will be my limit. That might limit me to the Romanian or Yugo variations.

A converted Saiga is the best bang for buck for anyone that is moderately handy and has a few hand tools. Otherwise a WASR is a decent AK for the money. I have always been fond of the Tantal, but it is difficult to find one with the lt. side safety lever (an important feature IMO) and good quality, especially at a reasonable price. Personally I can't understand anyone wanting a high-end AK (like a milled variant)...they make VZ.58's for that. ;)

I'm gunna say look at Classic Arms. Romanian AK underfolder for $419. I'd pay $469 and get the bag and 2 extra mags.

If pricing isn't an issue .... avoid WASRs. You are more likely to end up with a lemon.

only if you're buying a used WASR from a few years back. J&G and AIM surplus are selling current production WASRs. I just bought a WASR from AIM last week, it has none of the internet-rumored problems. Straight front sight, straight gas block, and less magazine wobble than my AR-15.

Yeah geesh this OMG avoid WASR's like the plague is pretty much the equivalent of OMG EVERY AR-15 sucks because once you submerge them in mud and try to shoot ****ty ammo they jam up. It was true back in the day but they are plenty of good ones out there now.

(my gosh i just defended the AR sorta and i'm an AK man, but the point had to be made)

Get a WASR if that's what you can afford, mine works just fine and most of them do, even the ghastly century builds. Spend whatever you have left on some spare mags and ammo.

If you get a WASR 10 it would help if you could examine it and assure there are no canted gas tubes or sights. These have improved in quality control recently. I have one and it's OK.
Keep in mind the WASR 10 is a strictly utilitarian gun. The wood is laminate and it ain't pretty, although a few people here have improved the wood. But the gun will likely do what it is supposed to do.

I got the Century Yugo under folder and its been a great rifle. You may need to change the fore arm to wood, but IMO its worth it. I have never heard that the stamped recievers rivets rattle, that is unadulterated BS
