.357 for whitetail deer

FWIW:
I've duplicated the BuffaloBore specs with the .357mag, and indeed the pressures are as low as they report.

Simply use Hodgdon's "Lil-Gun" powder.

From my 4" RugerSecurity-6, I get 1,400+ fps with the Remington 158gr JSP (bought a bunch of them cheap before the '08 price increases), over 17.8gr of LilGun. (Hodgdon's lists 18.0gr as max, but this is due to reasons besides pressures- increases above this cause excessive velocity variations and decreasing accuracy..with no significant increase of velocity.)

I got 2,150fps from a 20" bbl Winchester M94 in .357mag. Pressures are about 1/3 less than with equivalent loads of H110/Win296.

Accuracy is whatever bullet/firearm are capable of.....

I shoot my 6" .357 out to 50 yds w/ 158gr xtp. If I am going to hunt a stand with shots out to 120yds I use my .44 7.5" w/ 240gr xtp. Anything 200 and under I use my .460 12" w/ 200gr fxt.

I am sure a .357 will kill a longer distance, but deer don't offer a perfect shot most times.
I agree with MCgunner that over 50yds the energy is not optimal, and will be less with a 4" barrel.

Having taken several deer with .357, I agree with some of the above comments.
"a .357 mag will do"
After nearly deafening myself with hot .357 loads in a ported gun, I started using my milder, more accurate, cast bullet handloads. At that point it seemed like I was just making pencil sized holes through the vitals.
I eventually migrated to a 7 1/2" bbl Blackhawk in .45colt for deer hunting.
My range for my handgun hunting, is similar to my bow range....around 40-50 yds max. Without some glass on a handgun, the front sight starts covering up too much deer at around 50 yds....at least for me it does.

The killing power of the .357 is Vastly under-rated for todays handgunners IMO. I Cook up 125gr handloads that reach 1900FPS from my six inch S&W and have taken Both whitetails and Blackbears with tremendous sucess at ranges of around 50-60 yards. The recoil is almost identical to a .44. It should be noted that my handloads exceed the Max power advertised by Buffolo Bore by more than 200FPS. Most people Refuse to push the case limits that high but it can be done safely with proper measurements, However it is the ABSOLUTE MAX!
