A close friend..a doctor..straight shooter..is driving to Washington St. from Texas and wants a gun along for personal protection for him and his wife.

After range time is this all I need to do? I found it on the net. Thanks, Johnny

"This is the most common transaction and by far the most profitable one to boot. In the state of Texas you do not have to transfer ownership of the firearm via a dealer, nor do you have to have the firearm re-registered as there is no such firearms registration in the state of Texas.

Your only obligation is to reasonably assume that the purchaser is a Texas resident and legally able to own and possess the firearm. Often times people will request a Texas Drivers License to ensure they are a state resident, write a bill of sale, and sometimes take information from the purchaser. All of these are not required, but to some, are good practice to ensure you, as the seller, are performing your duty properly. Each seller's methods vary, and some buyers are defensive about providing personal info to strangers due to identity theft.

Once the transaction is performed you are done. There's no paperwork, no phone calls, etc. to be made."

This seems too simple. Would someone comment please? Thanks, Johnny

Surprised? "Face-to-face" transfers are legal in Tx, so that's all you have to do.

Now, as a friend, I'd caution him to be aware of the gun laws in each state he'll be passing through. If he follows the FOPA rules he'll be legal but there are some states where he might be able to have the gun with him in the car instead of locked in the trunk. On the other hand, there are some little "gotchas" like -- if he's traveling through CA, a lot of standard-capacity handgun capacity magazines are illegal, period.

I'd probably point him to handgunlaw.us and maybe opencarry.org. Or, if he's a GOOD friend, and not really into gun stuff, I might even download, print, and collate the pertinent rules for him so he can track as he moves from state to state.

Bah! I misread your OP. I thought it was from Washington to Texas and he wanted to buy your gun when he arrived.
Mea culpa.

If he's planning to drive home through CA, he will literally have to unload the gun and bury the gun in the trunk of the car with ammo in a separate area.

Quohelth..he lives in Texas..has all his life. Just wants a gun for protection. I'm thinking basic S&W .38 and half a box of ammo. He's driving to Washington State and returning in 3 months. Thanks for the input! J
