Hi everyone,

I searched but did not find a specific direct answer to this question. If I am a Kansas resident and want to make a face to face purchase in Texas, is that allowable, or must I be a resident of the state of Texas to legally complete this transaction?

Thanks!

If a long gun you can buy in another state by going to a dealer there and he can do the transfer.
If a handgun, it will have to be sent to a dealer in your home state.

Thanks for the responses. Please clarify. The transaction could be completed FTF, then I could ship the weapon to an FFL in Ks.? Yes, no, maybe? THANKS!

With few exceptions (PCSed military), you can only by handguns in your own state. Rifles can be bought in another state if that state permits it.

If you're physically in TX and want to buy a handgun from an individual, then you pay the Texan and he mails (or has a gunshop mail) the pistol to a KS FFL. When you return to Kansas, go to that FFL and pick up the pistol. There is basically no way you can legally acquire the pistol except in KS itself.

If it's a rifle, you may be able to accompany the seller to a local TX FFL and have it transferred there. Different states have reciprocity with different states in this matter. As a Texan, I legally bought a rifle in AZ, but was told that I couldn't buy one when I was in MS. Go figure.
