I have got an Auto Ordnance GI Spec 1911 that is the first handgun I ever bought. I bought it when I was 20 (17 years ago!), and even though it has never been much to brag about I have always liked it. When I was younger I shot the heck out of it. But over the years it got shot less and less.

Last week I had it at the range trying out a new reload recipe. As always it performed perfectly. But it was the first time I had shot it in quite a long time. I asked myself why I didn't shoot it much anymore. The answer was pretty simple. The sights were a mess. The front blade is the wrong one, and the rear sight is the standard miniscule USGI one. I have been spoiled by target sights as I have gotten older!

Later that day I thought about adding a red dot to it to see what would happen. Well long story short I ended up ordering a Burris Fastfire and associated mounting hardware. It showed up today.

I should add that when I ordered the sight Midway had a special on Pachmayer 1911 grips. I couldn't resist the temptation and they got shipped as well!

Here is the pistol just as I bought it. Wrong front sight, well used, just your standard 1911.

And finally, how many of you have played Half Life? This picture just makes me feel like I am stalking down a poorly lit hallway hunting head crabs!

No range report yet. I just put it together this afternoon. I can't wait to see how it performs. The grips are VERY comfortable, and the Fastfire is a very cool bit of hardware. I can't wait to get to the range to get it zeroed and see how it works.

You just reminded me that I need to reload my old CD of Half-Life and give it another runthrough! Loved those laser sights in that game.

That's the setup I've used on my RIA for the past five years or so and almost 15,000 rounds -- including the Pachmayer hybrid wood/rubber grips! Although since I had Lasik I'm back to shooting mostly iron sights now using a fiber optic insert front sight.

I like it. Nice project. It makes me start thinking about my SA Loaded in a new way.

The red dot sight looks very nice on the gun. Why have I seen red dot sights that look like they butchered the gun to get them on? This sight has to deal with the jarring of being mounted on the slide. They are made to get this abuse? Which is better a sight like this or a rail mounted laser?

Nice.

How is the dot on those Fastfire II sights? Nice and round like an Aimpoint, a starburst, or somewhere in between?

I will be getting another small red dot sight soon and was wondering if it is better than the Ultra Dot L/T.

I used to think red dots on pistols were evil, but now that my vision isn't what it used to be, they allow me to shoot better.

Two groups. One with open sights, and the other with a red dot. I can do better with open sights, but not as good as the red dot target.

Red dots do get you on target quickly and they appear in the same plane as the person trying to shoot you. They have amazing battery life. As long as you check them regularly you should be just fine.

If they fail (everything fails, even irons sometimes) at home defense distances you can shoot through the sight & still hit.
