I went to the store the other day and the guy tried talking me into a Nikon Monarch scope. I believe it was 8-32x which looked pretty damn nice, but the reticle seemed to be pretty thick for shooting 600 yards which he pointed out.

I am not looking for a scope that I can drop from a 10 story building and pick up and use it without adjustment. I am just looking for a good crisp clear scope that has good magnification at least 24x for 600 yards.

The Nikon was about $550 at the local store which is about the extent of what I would like to spend unless someone could talk me into $1k for something I can't live without.

I shot a Vortex 6.5-20X a couple of weeks ago. I think it was a 20X. When I first sat down behind the rifle and looked through the scope, I had to stand up and see what it was that I was looking through. It was nice for a $400 scope. I just bought a Super Sniper 10X and it didn't come close to the clarity of the Vortex Viper. Sadly, I went with the SS because it had an etched reticle, rather than wire and I thought it would be a better scope. Now, I'll take the wire reticled Vortex with the clear glass over the etched reticle of the SS any day.

I just don't want a scope as big as the Vortex is. I wound up ordering a Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10X. That's a nice scope with mildot reticle, although the adjustments are MOA. Go figure.

I would go with the n ikon, but a lower power, and not so much money.
Like a 3x12, for about 200 to 250 bucks. Nikon makes very good stuff
for decent money.

I would also not overlook Weaver; there top 2 lines are super scopes for the money, and use Japanese glass--- can't go wrong with that.

Tony my 6.5-20x50 Vortex came in today....my scope is bigger than your scope!! hahahehhe

LOL, so it's like that, eh?

Congrats!! When you shoot it, take note of how little distortion there is under fire. You can watch the targets vaporize in the scope.

I can't wait until they release the Viper PST. I may never need to look at another Nightforce or USO scope again. I really dig Japanese glass. It works well and doesn't carry the European glass price tag.

try that one from weaver I think its 36x fixed and from I read, its the best bang for your buck-has excellent tracking consistency

I have two rifles in .308.
One is a Remington 700 LVSF(rare)and I have on it an older Nikon UCC Monarch in 3x9x40
A very, very good scope that I would rate very close to a Leupold VX-111.
The other rifle is an older Remington 600 with a Leupold 2x7 VX-1.
Both scopes have very good eye relief, which is very important too me.
Just be aware a lot of Asian made scopes do not have the eye relief typical of Leupold scopes.
Either scope will serve most people's needs entirely.
Although neither would be in the league of a 24 power scope which is pretty big.

Might I ask what the intended target is? A fine plex scope with high magnification is great for bench work but a real terror to hold steady in the field.

Just wondering if you're pickingoff gnats or elk as it may help with suggestions.

Yeah, they are blowing out those Vortex Viper target reticle scopes. They are only meant for exactly that. Target shooting. I believe Sky just got one and he'll be posting something after he gets to use it.

That Viper has nice glass though. I think the mildot reticle model still sells for $400. It's a deal at that price anyway.

$250 at SWFA

Mine arrived last week. Very nice. I like the fine hair target dot set up, but some don't. I have four scopes set up like that now. Two 36X Leupolds, one 6X18 Buckmaster, and now the 6.5X20 Vortex. When I get some new rings (30MM), it's going on my Sako .222 Mag.

Another scope I would have never tried if it was not on sale is the Simmons 6.5X20 Whitetail classic. All I can say is Wow....great scope for the money. It would have been a good deal at $250, but is an awesome deal at $110. If you want a Mil Dot recticle, it's $125

Got one!

Well I ended up getting a Nikon Monarch 8-32/50 for 480 bucks. It has the BDC reticle on it. $30 rebate too. Getting it mounted on the gun as we speak.

I ended up getting a Remington 700 300 win mag instead of the 308 for the simple reason I WON it at the Friends of NRA banquet here in town. Saved me a load of money :)

Thanks for the info everyone!
