Hi all,

Newbie to the forums here, but been reading them for a while. I just got my dream rifle. The Remmington 700 SPS 308. I want to buy a really nice scope for it, but also not break the bank (thinking $500 is my limit). I'm not a hunter and I also don't envision shooting beyond 500 yards. I've done quite a bit of research and it's seems like I'm gravitating towards either the Nikon Monarch 4X16 42mm or the Vortex Viper 6.5x20 50mm.

Here are links to the two scopes. I'd really appreciate some feedback from people if they've compared the two or best yet shoot through both. Thanks all for reading.

I have the Nikon on my Remington 700 tactical. Myself and the son are pleased with it. No experience with Vortex. Picked mine up on E-BAY for 317.00 shipped.

no experience w/ the viper, but at 20x your gun will be very 'scope-heavy'.

on a 700 sps, have a look at scopes that top out around 12-16 power. i've had good luck w/ leupold, sightron, zeiss, nikon and some of the bushnells.

in this specific application, i reccomend a sightron s-2 3-12x42 or a nikon buckmaster.

congratulations on the stick, and good luck!

No experience here with either scope, but I see you're new to THR. Welcome and enjoy the forum. :)

Thanks guys for the responses. Dakotasin... I didn't envision going up to 20X, but the amazing reviews and discussions I've read about it just made me have to pay attention to Viper. I read it was super clear through 15X and up. And if it's clear to that magnification I was thinking it's nice to have it and I don't have to use all the power. I'm shooting from a bench with a Harris.

Deadeye... that's a great price. I'll definitely check out eBay when I make my final decision.

Thank you Geno. I'm glad to be here and appreciate the welcome.

Nikon

The Nikon scopes are fantastics scopes. People usually follow it up "for the money", but honestly in my experience the Monarch is right up there with any scope under $1k. Go take a look at the Monarch and you will be very pleasantly surprised. I have looked at them alongside Leupold VX-3 and Zeiss Conquest and Monarch was better to me than the Leupold and on par with the Zeiss. My vote is for the Monarch.

Thanks Bear. I appreciate the feedback. I was considering just going with the Zeiss Conquest 3X9 but I wanted a bit more magnification. The Monarch seems like a great choice.
