24 hour coyote season starts tomorrow and just simply wondering what experiences everyones had with differant loads used SPECIFICALLY for hunting coyotes...currently im using M855 62gr and PMC 55gr.....im going to purchase some hunting ammo tomorrow im thinking hornady VMAX...any suggestion? FYI my rifle is a custom RRA platform with heavy stainless barrel 1:8 twist

i can't testify to it just yet, as i haven't killed anything with it yet, but you might want to look into some of the new NPs, specifically the federal vital-shok 60gr NPs.. DocGCR said it's one of the best performing loads for an AR there is, and i was pulling sub-MOA groups with it when zeroing for deer season. i was sort of shocked, not expecting much from an SP.

if you're stuck on fragmenting loads, that doesn't help you much, though.

thanks for the help guys,....well my ammo dealers on vacation..so im stuck with my own stock...do you guys have any experience with PMC 55gr FMJ?? or Silver Bear 62gr?? both will do the trick...but which would drop one dead in its tracks faster?? i know silver bear JHP dont really expand like they claim..But would the 55FMJ cause more hydrostatic shock?? im gonna load one 30rd mag of both and test em out...im leaning torwards the PMC cause ive read here on THR that PMC uses M193 specs in loading of their 5.56mm cartridges????

for hunting , i've used the winchester 64 grain power points. for deer they are fantastic. nosler 60 grain'er partitions are also great.
they both will kill anything on the planet.

if you reload.? barns 70 tsx's solid copper , but must have a fast twist barrel, my 1-7 twist loves em.

guys i just took a 55 pound yote the last night before deer season...with the PMC 55gr FMJ,one heart shot at ahh 45yards, the exit wound was ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE..i guess they really are loaded relatively "CLOSE" to military M193...cause that round yawed and really exploded against his heart, lungs and ribs....nice clean kill he only made it 8 feet

I have 50 gr Nos. Balistic tips, 55 gr Win. soft points and 60 gr Nos Parts. loaded up for coyotes. No field reports yet. Dang the luck!

If you can hit a coyote with a .223 projectile, any will do. No need to split hairs on this one.
guys i really agree with(ssfeldjager).....i just took another dog exactly an hour ago...estimate ahh 45-50 pounds,just....again with PMC 55gr FMJ...this time in the abdomen...i had the laser on his head at 60 yards i seen he started to run and i squeezed the trigger, thats were i hit her...utter destruction,i wanted this pelt was really nice, but it F***d it all up.....im beginning to LOVE PMC,AND SILVER BEAR...these rounds are just fine out to 100yds...i used 5.56 red-tip 55gr V-MAX for the first time today picked some up today i got awesome groups...i borrowed a ACOG AND GOT 1/2" GROUPS!!!AMAZED!!! but back to coyotes, any .223 or 5.56 will do..but still wanting testimonials on which is best???thanks guys and happy and safe hunting and shootin!!!

I'd say what shoots best in your gun, in my Rem R-15 that is Hornady 55gr V-Max. 2nd best Black Hills 60gr V-Max.

I hand loaded some of the 75gr. hornady hpbt, with 22.5grms of w748 and cci450 mag. primers and I'm getting 1/2" groups at 100 yards, but the tend to tear yotes up a bit, I loaded em for deer but my 1 in 7 twist ar loves the heavier bullets too, so I've been useing them for everything.

i took another coyote the other day at 50-60 yards..with hornady 75gr v-max, head shot..and he went down immediately..i shot another in the rear somewhere? but i lost the blood trail and my flashlight went dead..so i returned using a back up 40 lumen blue led head lamp...sucks i couldnt find the second..but hornady makes awesome rounds! i have a really nice pelt now

Heres what I would use in my Dad's AR...
Hornady A-Max
Hornady V-Max
Sierra Matchking
Hornady Softpoint, interlock, or interbond.
Pretty much any expanding round you can shoot well will work well.

I prefer to use 55 vmax loads for coyotes. They, and other explosive loads, not only kill the coyotes well but reduce the chance of ricochets when misses occur. FMJ loads ricochet really badly on flat ground when misses happen and will probably do the same when they pass right through your target. This may not be an issue way out west, but it certainly is in farm country. I'll bet more misses occur on coyotes than any other medium size mammal due to our readiness to take running shots on them. Sometimes there is more to think about than just the bullets effectiveness on the target. Think about neighbors. Think safety.

This post is useless without photos ;-)

55gr Vmax or 40gr Vmax if you are talking over 300yds as they are a flatter trajectory at least out of my Bushmaster. They are both the best I have found. Stay away from FMJs as they are illegal in most states to hunt with and cause more run offs.
