I'm still intrigued by the idea of having a handgun and a rifle/carbine in the same caliber.

But the Smith and Wesson revolver and .357 lever gun option - those Marlins and even the Rossis seem too pricey.

So Kel-Tec with a S&W 59 magazine? That might work.

I was reading about Kel-Tec .223 rifles, are their 9mm carbines any good? They sure look ugly as heck!

if you like 9 mm go with the smith and wesson and a marlin camp 9 which if you look around you can find at a reasonable price and the camp 9 uses smith and wesson mags.
just be sure to replace the recoil buffer and upgrade the bolt spring to at least a 16 lb spring from wolf, i actually put the 21 lb spring in mine and it shoots sweet

9mm Glock and one of those AR lowers that take glock mags. I forget who makes them but I know they are out there.

^^ I like this idea. Nice thing about Glocks... they make high-quality 33 round mags that are great for the carbine and might come in handy for the pistol, too. That and Glocks never die and have great triggers compared to a SA/DA or DAO. And with the AR there are so many after market parts, you could set it up however you like. I would be all for a short barrel with a suppressor under some free float handguards.

I think both Olympic and Lone Wolf make those AR lowers.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd heard the Marlin carbine needed some special care - but the fact that it would take the same magazines as the pistol is a nice feature. Keeping it simple always works best for me.

I run the Camp 9 carbine paired to a Keltec P-11. Both are built around the S&W Model 59 magazine. The Keltec runs fine on the S&W 15 rounders,..but doesn't want work well with the standard out of the package 20 and 30 rounders. The mags need a stiffer spring for the Keltec to pick up the next round to feed as it cycles very quickly. Replace the spring in the mag with a heavier one and they work fine.

Do you already own the S&W 59? If not, you are probably better off getting the Glock, in the long run.

If I were doing this, I would get matching Glock 23's and register one as an SBR for the HERA or CAA carbine system. I don't think I would wand a 9mm that was the length of a rifle, but lacked all the firepower. Better to keep it as compact as possible, IMO

Already have a Smith and Wesson semi-auto with a bunch of 59 magazines - that's why I'm thinking about a carbine that takes the same. Like to keep it cheap as well as simple. I see Kel Tec carbines for about $300 on GunBroker.

I have two combo teams ... S&W 15 paired with a Marlin 1894c. Blue steel and walnut, beautiful and fun.

And just recently...

RIA 1911 tactical and Hi Point 4595 in .45 acp ButUgly and lots of fun.

Couple of questions might help us here.

What caliber of pistols do you already own? Do you have any pistol caliber carbines already? You mentioned price as a factor. Is there some kind of price range you are looking for? Are you wanting a revolver or semi auto?

I currently have pistol/rifle combos in .22 mag, .357, 45 colt, and 9mm.

You can usually get a .357 revolver pretty cheap. The Hi Point offers a very inexpensive carbine in 9mm, .40, and .45. The Kel-Tec has some nice options as well.

.22 LR can be a very inexpensive combo to put together. You can go lever/revolver for something old style or semi-auto/semi-auto for something more modern.

But without knowing what kind of system you are wanting and your price range we don't have much to go on for suggestions.

What I own:

Smith and Wesson J and K frame revolvers in .38 and .357.

Smith and Wesson pistols in 9 mm. Single stack and double stack mags (59). I understand the Kel-Tec and Marling Camp 9 both take Smith and Wesson 59 size magazines.

Got a bunch of long guns, but none in these calibers.

So was thinking about a rifle/carbine in either .38/.357 or 9mm, since I don't feel the urge to buy anymore handguns. The other criteria would be reliability at the lowest price.

I pair a Kel Tec Sub2000 9mm that takes Glock mags with Glock 19. Glock mags of varying capacities can be used in both. Std capacity gor the G19 is 15rds and I have a few 33rd mags. The Kt can be folded in half so portability is very nice. It is 16" long folded.

The function of the KT has been reliable and accurate to 50/75yds. I am going to replace the front sight with either an AK-47 or AR15 to make it more durable. Overall I like the KT. The KT weighs 4-1/2lbs so it is extremely light and the ergonomics are decent.

I love matched pairs
S&W mod 41 and Marlin mod 60
Marlin 1894 and Colt Python or Diamondback
S&W 651 and Ruger 77/22 Mk II
Been lookin for one to go with my FNP-9

The Marlins in 9mm were good running guns, problem is finding one at a decent price these days, folks seem to think they are made of gold. If you do find one and know a good smith that has good welding skills you can have a Suomi drum fitted to a 59 magazine body. Never know when 71 round will come in handy!
