How well does the Hornady SST round work on deer?

Here is a couple more pictures of my sons first buck. It was taken from a distance of 178 yards with a .243 win using Hornady custom ammo with a 95 grain SST bullet. This is not a small deer by any means Keigan in this picture is approx 5' 1" tall and weighs in at around 97-98# for a comparison. The bullet entered as seen it smashed up a couple ribs, heart, lungs, and the opposite leg is broken. Bullet did exit the animal with what I would say to be a small exit wound. Deer are not all that tough even larger mid-western whitetails and mule deer. keigansdeer010.jpg

Nice deer your son has there. I would say that little tinny 243 and way to lite bullet design did a fine job. Darn nice deer.

Little brother uses a 300 win mag 180 gn sst but the problem is it puts a fist size hole in the deer. i took my first deer with a 180 gn sst in a 30-06 at 200 yards, lil 4 pointer but better than nothing, walked about 10 yards then dropped. ive noticed they pass right through which can be a problem meaning it may not be delivering all the energy produced by the rifle, or i should be using a smaller caliber ha ha.

Maybe more to do with bullet wieght and bore size on your deers. Maybe a 150 or 165 grain version would act differently. I younger guy back in alabama used a 300 win mag with 150gr sst's with great results. With bought long clear cut shots and close up shots. The 139gr I use in my 7mm rem mag are pushing 3380fps and only pass thru shots i have had was when i miss judged the yardage on a quick shot and hit high and blowed up a section of backbone along with a couple inches below. All chest shoots stay inside with minor fragging. Those 180's maybe a bit to tough for deer, maybe more of an elk load.

I've used the SST's in .243 on coyote's and they make a big mess if you get a rib-shot (will blow a 1-1/2" hole right out the other side),, but i did have a straight-on shot once where i jerked the trigger and sent one into the shoulder/chest area,, he spun and bounced around before i could get him with my 3rd-follow-up shot,, when i did get him skinned i was amazed at how my 1st shot seemed to have created a "crater" in the body,, literally just blew a 1" deep / 2" wide crater in the yote's shoulder, like the bullet exploded on impact,, i went back to my lighter 58gr varmint-tips and now the penetrations seem to be deep and explosive once inside the meat, but only leaving small puncture to sew-up

i shoot a 139 gr 7mm 08 hornady superformance sst. I killed a doe with it this past season and it performed very well. In my experience, it's an accurate round and is all i could have asked for for white-tails around here. The shot was at about 120 yds so the wound cavity wasn't overly large, but it definately did the job. I actually found the bullet because she was quartering toward me, and it stayed together really well.
