Shooting This Sunday....

Dave,

It's not the Chart House, but along that stretch....it's a big yellow building that's relatively new....I'll figure it out....

Hold up - got a question folks. :p Umm how to tie this in?
I ain't ever had crab soup, crab cakes yes. I have had Clam Chowder ( both New England and Manhatten) from "up east" that was sent to me. so do I *ahem * need some Crab soup sent down here so I can shoot as well as you guys? :D

Just wonderin'...I'll be there in spirit, physically down here, handicapped in my shooting abilites, because I have no crab soup...sniff...sniff...

Correia... something for you to consider as well...anything to shave some time ...

I was over at PGC yesterday and they had cases of Remington Gun Club 8s for $37.50; about on par with the value packs of Federal or Winchester.

Besides the 4 Rules, which WILL be observed constantly, trap has a few more. These fall more under etiquette than safety.

Close your action only when it's your turn to shoot. Same for mounting.

Shells may be inserted before your turn but keep the shotgun empty when changing stations.

The trap ranges have voice activated launchers. Little to no talking on the line. Cussing is permitted after a miss if done quietly.

When the shooter on Post 5 has to move to Post 1, he or she shall turn to the right to avoid contact with the shooter moving over from Post 4.

If you'd like to look more closely at someone's shotgun ask permission first. Your Mossie, 870 or whatever may be racked next to a Parker SBT with the best factory engraving they offered, gold inlays and be worth more than my newest vehicle. Mine has. Be careful around any shotguns. $5,000- 15,000 shotguns are not uncommon here.

If kids accompany you, keep them away from the gun racks. Not so much for safety, but to keep them from accidently knocking that Parker over.

That's about all I can think of....

Pure curiosity Dave ... do you guys also like the shooter from #5, newly arrived at station #1 to declare when ready?

My two places tend to like this and I have done it as habit now for quite some time .... something like ''ready on one'', once I am settled with a new shell inserted.,... so next guy up knows he can get on again.

Oh and .... spoken I might add away from the direction of the voice activation mic! :)

Ok when it's your turn can you have your gun mounted (high or low) before you call for the pigeon or do you have to mount after the pigeon is launched?

anapex,

I've seen it done both ways.....seems the guys who are practicing for bird hunting go from low while others go from already up.....

I make the call from a high mount FWIW

Ok one last question (for now), are the ranges we will be shooting on single or double trap? Ah also what choke will everyone else be using?

Well one more thing now to add, will people be annoyed by ejectors? I can disable them if I have to but I like to keep em on since it's what I'm used to.

Anapex ..... just a comment tho I won't be there ...... I think you will find most people use full choke and even more! As a rule . you need some ''reach''

Ejectors ... may I just suggest what I find useful ... and this avoids hulls hitting anyone else, and also having to pick up after. As I open the gun .. I bring the barrels back into my vest ... so that just as the hull is about to spring out, it is cushioned and held by the vest . I then remove it and place in pocket prior to reload.

Just a suggestion.:)

anapex,

I still haven't gotten my 870 to behave re:ejecting shells. Seems no matter how gentle I am, they just jump right out of there:p

The rental Beretta I used a few weeks ago slung the spent hulls 5-6 feet behind me no matter how slowly I opened the action....

I'll be picking up alongside of ya.....

Chris...tsk tsk tsk, buy you books and send you to school...I swear what are we gonna do with you? OK class one more time since Chris was not paying attention. For right-handed shooters, Using O/U , shell pouch at ~ 4 o'clock , open gun and a rotate just slighly and the hulls will land in pouch. Optional method is the catch them in mid air...I like to catch one and have one land in pouch...they might be giving "style points" that day and one cannot have too many style points.

Repeaters, if right handed have your partner to the right and back, have hulls land into the extra shell pouch he is wearing on left side. If you have a left-handed partner, its much easier...he catches for you and you for him ( just get to his left...no extra pouches and nobody the wiser.

Worst case just lie and get a cute girl with a nice outfit to stand there wearing a shell pouch. Even grumpy old men won't yell at a cutie. :D

OK I learned this by accident, it works, not my fault the grumpy guys missed because they were focusing on wrong "bird". :p

P95, the shooter moving to Post 1 should signal when ready. Usually just a wave or nod to not launch a bird.

Anapex, high or low gun. I usually shoot trap from high. Chokes can run from Modified to Extra Full. Singles only.

Norton, let me show you how to do that.

When using a break open gun, I just use a thumb to stop the empty from ejecting. One guy sets a bucket to catch his empties behind him a few feet.

As for pretty girls, still looking for one to serve as model for the photos in Shotgun 101. Apply in person, please.

And please police your empties. Those folks who do not reload and are shooting STS shells can dump the hulls in my shooting box.

Fish, $3.75 isn't bad for those....

Well, I'm still wearing a grin.

Went to PGC as stated and met lots of folks I knew from here.

Fish, Duckman,Norton, anapex,MikeK and several more met up. While folks came and went, we had enough folks for two squads at one point.

Considering the temps never got above 15 or so, a great turnout and quite a lesson for me.

One gent brought his daughter, who may end up as the model in the pics for Shotgun 101. She shot OK for her first time and used Son's little NEF while her dad borrowed #6.

And, at one point I sat back and watched people who had little shotgun experience happily destroying clay after clay after clay. It was a great warmfuzzy for me. And when that young lady shattered her first clay with me at her elbow, it would have taken a careful eye to tell who was happier about it.

And there were surprises. Fish brought his NEF single, and outshot me one round. For a beginner, he did wondrous well.

Norton brought his recent present, an 870 Express field model, and destroyed most of the targets.

Everyone had a good time, especially me. Thanks, folks. Let's do it again soon....

Thanks once again, Dave, for a great morning out. While it wasn't quite as cold as the last time do to lack of wind....it sure was brisk enough to keep one's mind clear:p

Twas a pleasure meeting a few more folks this time. It's a funny experience when a few non-THR members wander by and say, "You guys all met on the internet? Hmmmm....."

It was a great 4 rounds of fun for me, but score wise I should have stopped after the first. I shot 18 for 20 on the first four stations and then 1 for 5 on station 5. It all went downhill after that.....but once again, it was all fun:D

It was good to see the young lady pound that first clay under Dave and her Dad's watchful eyes. We were sitting back on the benches and let out a round of congratulations. It was cool to hear her when she came back off of the range and said, "That was FUN!." Anapex and I were discussing that it was heartening to see a young lady getting into shooting....maybe some hope for MD after all:D

Take care all....don't forget about the indoor shoot at Continental on the 25th....2:30pm.

Dave, thanks once more for prompting us to head out to PGC. What a nice place that is to shoot! I wish I'd brought my digital camera to take some photos of all the folks who turned out to shoot in the cold. And of course I'd love to have gotten some shots of the grin on Marie's face when she burst her first clay, just to show my wife -- "See, honey, it really is fun!"

The next time we do this, it might be amusing to get some business cards printed up with the URL for The High Road to hand out to people -- "The sanest firearms bulletin board on the Net!" or somesuch...

Dave - another heartfelt thanks! Now that you've shown me some of the basics I need to BA/UU/R. It was nice to meet a few more THR folks. We are a great bunch of people aren't we? I will certainly try to make it out there next Sunday.

I had some cycling/ejection problems with my new SX-2 after the first two rounds (50) but I'll make that a seperate post. Cold weather?

As Norton and Fish mentioned, the young lady really seemed to enjoy herself. For those of you that may know women interested in trying out shooting there are several Women On Target events scheduled near Baltimore this year. For information www.monumental.org

Folks, nobody had more fun than me. I'll be happy to do it again soon. AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN........

Mike, run a few more boxes through that thing and I wager it'll settle down. Gas autos need a breakin.

Norton, When I drop several in a row, it's time to run down the checklist.

Am I keeping the swing going?

Am I keeping my face on the stock?

Am I concentrating on the leading molecule?

And so on.

Well I had a great bit of fun yesterday. I didn't hit as many as I would have liked (It was the cold yeah that's it the cold ;) ) but it was still fun. Shotgun worked good and I worked out a pretty good way to keep it from kicking the shells out 5 feet behind me. Like Norton said we had a great time watching a young person learn to shoot a shotgun, hopefully she'll keep up with it. Also like Norton said we have the indoor shoot coming up on the 25th at Continental in Timmonium it'd be nice to get a decent group together for that. My only regret after getting home Sunday was not staying to shoot at least another round.

Must have been the cold for me too(G)....

Had a great time. And I vow to stick my head out of Shotguns more often. WHAT indoor shoot?

A definite maybe, Wonderful gets back from Fla then, and I don't shoot much pistol since the cataract surgery. Might come just to meet folks.

If you want Dave I have a 12 gauge Winchester Defender 1300 that I've been tempted to bring, we'd have to put 00 through it but at least it be a shotgun for ya :) .
