I had an interesting water moccasin fishing experience down here in Louisiana. I was used to them from growing up in Missouri where we have issues with them while boating but I had never experience the ball-o-cottonmouths that I did down here. I guess it was mating season but they were all balled up and really hyper-aggressive. I was fishing on shore of a pond with a buddy and we ran out of snake shot because they kept charging us while we were fishing. They would ball up and one would break away and come right at us, we would shoot it, and then in a few minutes it would happen again. Not sure how many we killed but when I ran out of snake shot for my .357 and had to shoot one with my CCW 1911 I decided it was time to call it a day.

Don't know about copperheads, but I was always warned that baby rattlers are the worse, as they empty their venom sacs instead of just a measured dose, or even a dry bite you might get from an adult defensive rattler.

Actually, this is with any venomous snake.

Babies ARE more dangerous, because they do not have the ability to meter their strike doses (i.e. no difference between defensive dosing or predatory dosing). Its not that they have more venom or that its more potent, those are the myths.

Just overheard this in a biology lecture yesterday.

I know they would be NFA firearms but a five or six center fire shot large smooth bore revolver with the proper choke shape would be ideal for a dedicated snake gun.

I wonder that no one makes a cap and ball revolver of that type for snake protection.

The April 2011 issue of Alabama Outdoor News magazine carried an article about an Alabama turkey hunter who took a nap while hunting in 2009. He awoke to see a 4'+ copperhead crawling across his lap! He and his hunting partner killed the snake with a stick.

I hope it wasn't still on his lap at the time !

No,he had to wait until it crawled clear but(according to the article) it WAS on his Benelli shotgun when they killed it. I don't think my nerves would have let me remain motionless (as he did)while a snake of ANY description crawled across me!

Why dont you eat them after you kill them?

If had to kill a snake I would definitely turn it into fajitas or something.

Opp,Alabama used to have one of the largest rattlesnake round-ups in the country. Animal-rights activists and other groups protested it and I haven't heard anything about it in several years. I don't know if it even still exists.

snake in pic #1 is named Waldo? i saw it cause you said it was in the pic but took me about 15 seconds. snake hunting is a profession i'll not be liken to any time soon.

If you have a dog and live in rattlesnake country, you might want to talk to your vet about vaccine.

You have to be careful about the vaccines, I've heard from a vet they can often be more dangerous than the venom when it comes to dogs. Many dogs have an allergic reaction to anti-venom.
