sks-chinese vs. yugoslav

I had a Norinco (Chinese) and it shot o.k. at 50 yards. I've heard (meaning no life experience holding one) that the Russian's are the best but hard to come by and a little more expensive.

They are fun to shoot and the ammo is dirt cheap!

I've had both. The Yugo is overbuilt by comparison, and with the gas cut-off, minute of grenade tangent sights and brake-like grenade launcher it is more interesting IMO. I bought it for its military surplusness and not so much as a regular shooter, I simply like it because it has more cool gizmos than the norinco. The downside is the thorough cleaning you must perfrom after every range session due to the non-chrome lined bore.
As for accuracy, they are about the same, with the Yugo being slightly better. (at least between my two)

The Norinco is not nearly as hefty, it has a chrome lined bore so you can shoot it and forget it, and it is not as well finished so you can beat the crap out of it without worry. It is a great "bottom of the trunk" gun.

My verdict: I sold the Norinco & kept the Yugo. I have an AK, though. I f I didn't, I would have likely kept the norinco instead for its lightness and worry free bore.

I had a Norinco SKS, and the one I had seemed to have a very distinct problem of the bolt not closing all the way over a full chamber. This little defect led to my first AD(I don't necessarily think it was negligent, as the problem was mechanical, not operator error, but I'm not here to debate that.)

Thankfully, no one got hurt and property damage was minimal, but from that moment on I've stayed away from the Norinco SKSs. If I were to purchase another SKS, I would go for the Yugo or other Combloc surplus. If you get a Norinco, watch that Bolt like a hawk and keep plenty of oil on it.

Prior to the incident, though, I loved it. Mine came with a 30-round banana mag, and she was a breeze to shoot. YMMV, though. What happened with mine more than likely won't happen with yours.

All SKS's run the risk of having the FP channel gummed up tight with cosmo when shipped. If that happens, the FP can protrude and the gun can become an unnexpected full-auto when placed into battery. It is possible that lowering the bolt on your gun had the FP resting against the primer, keeping it slightly out of battery. When forced home, it can fire. Is that what happend with your ND?

not quite. We had a possible home invasion when we came home once, with lights on where we KNEW we shut them all off before we leave, and doors open that we normally keep close. My dad told me to go grab my SKS while he went to grab his AR. We kept both in places only we would know about, so we grabbed them, and each put a round in the chamber. We kept barrels up while we went over the house with a fine-toothed comb, as well as fingers off the triggers unless we saw someone.

We finally met back up in his room, at the back of the building, not finding anything, and I was about to set my SKS down to jack the round out and remove the magazine, when I bumped it just right, and BOOM. Let me reiterate, finger off the trigger, barrels up, and it discharged. It wasn't a cleaning issue, I get kinda OCD when it comes to cleaning my weapons, because little specks of dirt and such annoy the snot out of me. Unless it's possible to overclean such a weapon?

Our ears were ringing for the better part of two days, and we found the bullet somewhere in the upper layers of the roof. We still haven't been able to explain why lights were on and doors were open.

ive got a norinco that i put a tapco set on and its more accurate out to 600 with iron sights and factory wolf 124gr ammo than any ak variences that are around me. i love it, fun to shoot comfortable and ammo is cheap. i keep my AR for accuracy matches and varminting.

The Norinco AK's and SKS's are very good rifles, among the best... I sold my Yugo and kept my Norinco...

Since I don't have any rifle grenades the Yugo's muzzle growth is just excess weight. The corrosive ammo I shoot has been known to corrode the gas shut off and Yugo's don't have hardchromed bores.

For what I do the chicom SKS is a better choice.

Assuming both are in good condition..

(Yugo SKS's also come in the model 59 version which is almost identical to the norinco, but I've never seen one in great condition)

The Norincos I've shot were better balanced and much lighter weight. The Yugo 59/66 with grenade launcher, assuming you get one without any gas tube problems, is built thicker/more sturdy, but the ruggedness is not worth the nose-heavy feel of it, unless you are just using it for target practice and not planning on carrying it around on the farm or whatnot.

I have a 1953 Russian sks that had a simular problem. I notice trying to fix trigger latch problem it had that a blow with a rubber mallet or the butt of the rifle getting smacked on the floor would drop the hammer (Never happened on a loaded chamber since I discovered it while trying to fix another problem). A new sear and info on the link above fixed it.

Always check sear engagement on an SKS no matter who made it.

My favorate SKS is a plane jane ugly standard mismatched numbered Norinco. I had it for years and love the thing. I shot it enough that I know that when I squeeze the trigger that it is going to work.


Had a Yugo at one time too. It was a nice accurate rifle but just to heavy so it got sold.

I had a chinese"carbine"smaller with a shorter barrel all decked out pistol grip and all and I wish I never would have sold it.I also have had a russian and yugo I would have kept the Chinese Norinco out of all of them.That was when yoou got a new sks for $75.00

One more for the Chinese......
