Has Case discontinued the full size Sodbuster with CV blade? I've been looking at a few online suppliers now and do not see one listed anywhere.

Carbon Steel

Yes, the large CV Sod Buster was removed from the Case catalog a while back.

I managed to pick up a couple on eBay a few years ago, and [thread=349841]posted on it here[/thread] when I received my first one.

Pictures from that thread:

There was [thread=352705]another thread[/thread] not long after where I walked through the patina process.

A bit farther down in that thread is this picture . . .

. . . showing the other (untreated) large Case Sod Buster in a "family photo" that includes a Böker carbon steel sodbuster.

The Böker blade is a more ordinary carbon steel, I'm guessing something like 1095. Takes a heck of an edge. Good feel in the hand. Almost exactly the size and weight of the Case.

The Böker line of carbon steel sodbusters is still in production and very reasonably priced.

If you can't find a Case CV on eBay or some similar place, and you really want a carbon steel blade, you might consider the Böker.

ArfinGreebly,

The pictures of your knives just brought back many fond memories of my grandparents and great uncle. Thanks. :)

Amazing how fast one can change his mine. After looking at all the other good sodbuster patterns, I figured I'd try out something new.

Went ahead and ordered a Bear & Son carbon steel barlow. Been itching to try out both Bear's quality and the barlow pattern, so two birds...one stone. Look forward to it's arrival this Thursday or Friday.

Bear in mind that Case has a "vault" system of temporarily ceasing production on particular knife patterns. Although the Sodbuster isn't on "vault" status, that doesn't mean it will be available in both sizes and in both steels offered by Case. Currently the large Sodbuster is available in stainless with black Delrin handles, while the Sodbuster Jr. is available in both stainless and CV (chrome vanadium) steel with yellow Delrin handles.

Got a note earlier that my Bear and Sons barlow has shipped. Really looking forward to getting it in hand and checking this thing out.

About 5 or so years ago, local Mom and Pop store had ALL their Case "in store" stuff on sale for 50% off !!
I bought 'em ALL and wound up with about 60 knives.
I have 3 of the large Sodbusters BUT all are of the Stainless variety.
I would love to find a large Yellow Handle CRV Sodbuster.

So, Zeke, just curious, what sort of material did you get in that haul?

Can you summarize? By general type? Y'know, 2 of this, 3 of that, six of something else. I mean, sixty? There have to be duplicates and triplicates.

I remember you mentioned this store clearance thing before, but I don't think I actually asked at the time. Can't imagine why I didn't.

Of course, we could take it to a separate thread . . .

Arfin,
I wound up with a variety of steels and of course duplicates of many patterns.
I have ,for example several CV's in the "jack texas pattern" 3 of the large folding hunters,Sodbusters, both large and small. several Barehead trappers. several other trappers with both yellow and amber handles with a few U.S made Schrades/Old Timers theown in for good measure.
Almost all the knives are in the factory packing with papers.

Whittlers & Stuff

I suppose it was too much to hope for that there would be something like a Seahorse Whittler (or other Wharncliffe configuration).

I'll refrain from dragging the thread any farther off course.

You mind if I take this side excursion to PM?

I have a couple full sized...one has been rehandled and I am looking for one more large to have a full sized Trapbuster made like the small one in the pic...

Never realized how rounded the handles on the Case really were until the side by side photo with the Boker. I think my Boker will go to the belt sander to take off the squared edges.

My full size Boker has been patina'ed and survived a week long Caribean cruise with no rust.
