Ok so today me and the wife are at the range zeroing in her new carbine. (10/22) She is extreamly boom shy so even a 9mm carbine was out of it for her. Anyway we are zeroing in her scope just a cheap 2x7 tasco for pest control. (coons and whatnot) So Im letting her do all the shooting and loading at a 25 yd target. Were going over breathing trigger squeeze platform and i cant help but notice her groups are all over the place. After about 200 rounds and 4 targets full of holes I didnt bother going down range and realized what was wrong. She was using the scope as a leverage point while moving the rifle to load and unload the magazine.:banghead: :fire: :banghead: I retighted down the scope and mounts explained to her why she shouldnt do that. 30 rounds later she was spot on. Just had to share before my head exploded.
Anyone ever have any issues like this?

( I got her back tho one of the guys had his M1A :) like I said she was boom shy):)

Glad to hear she's enjoying herself and spending some time on the range.

I don't know what kind of rings you've set up, and none will compensate for utter abuse or bad technique, but you may want to look at some better rings.

So...

1. Why didn't you tighten the scope rings properly to begin with? :neener:

2. Why did it take 200 rounds for you to see what she was doing... busy watching other women?

Yeah...I was getting horrible shot placement with my M1917 which had been perfect last trip to the range. Took me 10 shots to realize I had forgotten to raise the sight leaf and was using the battle sight rather than the leaf sight.:banghead:

That's an easy oversight. Good that you discovered it. Under normal circumstances however it shouldn't have made much (if any) difference. --It pays to have good glass and quality rings soundly secured and mounted!

I spent more than one frustrating range day sighting in a Mosin-Nagant 91/30. Tried different ammo, tightening the front sight in the dovetail, and all manner of adjustments. It was on the third trip that I realized, the dang action loosened up when being shot. In fact, tightening down the action screws to prevent them from working loose (don't want to loc-tight because it will have to come out some time), the back end actually dropped down so much the bolt would drag on the magazine--has to put a washer under the rear action screw.
The darn things are surprising precise (given what they are and cheap commie surplus ammo) once you make the action tight:p.

Use "blue" locktite. Will firm it up nicely, but with the proper tool and a little umph can still be removed.

She shouldn't do that. But the scope shouldn't lose zero, regardless.

On an AUG, you are actually supposed to use the scope as a carry handle!

Beware those cheap Tasco scopes.

Years ago, I bought a Marlin Model 60 with...wait for it...a cheap Tasco scope. Didn't shoot worth a damn. No matter what ammo I tried, it would make patterns a shotgun would have been ashamed of. I finally just cursed myself for buying a cheap rifle, put it in the back of the closet, and forgot about it.

Years later, I noticed it back there one day, and decided to take it apart to try and find out what was wrong with it. As I removed the scope, something rattled, so I gave it a good shake, and, sure enough, something inside was loose. It turned out to be one of the internal lenses (I believe the erector) rattling around loose in its mount.

I gave the gun a good cleaning and left for the range, leaving the scope behind. With the buckhorn sights, the thing shot like a dream. Today, it's one of my favorite guns, and shoots great with almost anything I feed it. A $10.00 scope almost made me discard a fine little rifle.

I took a female friend out to shoot and I was watching everything she was doing.

Captaingyro - my mother has a Marlin 60 (Glenfield) that we ended up putting a cheap red-dot site on as she can't use a scope with her contact. She's a pretty good shot with it but I can't use it, at least, not when the sun is behind me.
I DO have a Tasco 3/4" 2-7x scope on my Marlin 881 bolt .22 and I can get 1-1.5 moa at 100 yds. with it at 7x.
That being said, I don't lug it around the woods much hunting squirrels as Illinois is so picky with distances from buildings for rifles.
