I think i got bitten by the shotgun bug and now i cant stop thinking until I get one. I never had one so I'm a shotgun newbie. I currently have an AR15 and 3 pistols. Anyway I got my eyes on the 870 Tactical which have a choke tube at the end of the barrel. The question is, can this choke tube be removed when firing the gun?

It's a Bad Idea to fire any shotgun fitted for choke tubes without a choke tube in place...

Does the 870 you are looking at have one of the "breacher" chokes?
If so, just replace it with a real choke.
The 870 below is a plain ole' 870 express with a breacher tactical ninja choke. Mall ninja's everywhere carry these in case they need to blow the hinges off the doors in their own home.

Save $150 and just get one of these:
(Same gun, minus the geehaws)

Yes the 1st picture with the breacher choke is the one I am talking about. So the choke has to be there when firing it? I assume the one below does not have thread in the barrel to accommodate choke tubes correct?

The door breaching choke is cheesey and marketed to mall ninjas, but the one advantage the newer one has is the ghost ring sights and picatinny rail. That;s enough of an improvement to warrant the extra cash.

I agree. I like the ghost ring sight but not a fan of the breaching choke. So can you just remove the choke and use the gun without it?

You need to replace the tacticool breacher choke with another choke of your choosing, perhaps an Improved Cylinder. Obviously, firing it over unprotected choke threads would damage them.

My walmart has an 870 tactical for under $300 its got screw in choke but not the breaching junk just a standard cylinder bore one (or possibly modified)

If your looking for your first thats the one I would go for

I just ordered my first shotgun, 870 express tactical with ghost rings and rail.. ordered a set of chokes 22 bucks while I was at it

According to Remington the breaching choke is an improved choke design so it help a little bit plus helps with recoil

Tactical for less that $300. Does it have the picatinny rail and ghost sights?

no flash it does not its just basically the 18 inch bbl version with polymer stocks it look identical to the picture above (the bottom shotgun in the picture)

The finish used on the Express guns is prone to rusting if not kept well oiled. I have had one since the 90s and found the best way to keep it protected is to use a small brush and apply a heavy coat of Breakfree CLP or Collector. Let it set for a while and blot off the excess with a clean rag. Since I started doing this have not had a speck of rust anywhere.

Vaseline has water in it I am told. I scrub the outside down with Mobil 1 and a small brush, wipe it dry then add another coat of Mobil 1, includin under and on top of the barrel rib. No rust issues ever.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
