I have been considering a Springfield Loaded Champion. But before I get into one, I wanted to see how the owners of the Taurus 1911s liked them. How do you guys think they hold up? would you trust your life to one? How are they compared to a springfield? Please have some experience with this gun. No "it is taurus so it must be junk" posts. I want an honest evaluation of these guns.
Thanks

I actually own both. The Taurus has functioned better out of the box than does my Champion, and my EMP for that matter. Only a few hundred rounds through the Taurus, but zero prob feeding FMJ or 230 gr Golden Sabers. The Champion has had major extraction issues, though I did get it to run smoothly for a couple hundred rounds by bending the extractor quite a bit. Until the last range trip, when it began acting up again. The EMP, after several hundred rounds, is still kinda picky about JHP (no, I did not try to run the .45's through it ha ha.) I know you didn't ask about the EMP, but then I couldn't have made that joke. One minor issue that the Taurus had was the right side thumb safety began to walk out ever so slightly, which I had read about. Tapped it back in with the handle of a screwdriver, and haven't had a problem since. Also, I have had to adjust my grip couple three times to fully engage the grip safety, which I have not had to do with any other 1911 I have ever shot. Still open to the belief of user error on that one. As far as trusting my life to it, it is pulling nightstand duty now, my Beretta being out on loan to a friend who is gearing up for his CHL class (he only owns revolvers, but wants to have the option of carrying either, silly Texas law.)
The other thing to consider, which will no doubt be brought up by others, is going to be the customer service side of things. I have dealt with Taurus CS one time, after a PT92 I used to have developed some hammer follow after a few thousand rounds. The phone was answered promptly, and my question answered politely. My only beef was that I had to pay shipping to get it to them, though to be fair I had shot the snot out of that particular gun. However, when I got it back, while the problem I sent it in for was fixed, the decocker would stick. Did it's job, mind you, but would have to nudge it to get it back to the fire position. Didn't affect the going bang, shuck the case, slap a new round in the chamber part of it, but was a minor annoyance nonetheless. Ended up selling it to a buddy, with full disclosure, and buying the Beretta. Haven't dealt with SA CS yet, though will after the holidays. Everything I have ever heard about them leads me to believe that it will not be a problem. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I hope that you have been able to mine some useful information out of the long-winded rant. Either way you decide to go, enjoy your new gun, and shoot well, friend.

I was looking at a lightly used Taurus and a lightly used S&W 1911 a couple of years ago. The Taurus was one of the top end stainless models with all options and about $200 less than the S&W.

Bought the Taurus and took it straight to the range. Three hours later I brought it back, paid the extra $200 and traded it for the S&W. Best gun trade I ever made. I'm not sure how the SA and S&W compare pricewise, but will tell you that the S&W is probably the best 1911 in that price range. I'd take one over Colt or Kimber any day.

The Taurus was not a horrible gun, but the fit, accuracy and general feel of the gun was not up to the standards of the Smiths, Colts and Kimbers I've owned.

I've owned SA 1911's before. The higher end guns are generally good. The budget guns such as the Mil-Spec are about the same quality as the Taurus

Bought mine when they were originally released. I never shoot a firearms without a good strip and cleaning, but this one went to the range and was fired the way it came from the factory.

Over two trips to the range, the PT-1911 fired 500 flawless rounds without cleaning. All rounds were 230 FMJ's.

Since then, this handgun has eaten anything I've given it. Whenever the Springfield doesn't like a round, I feed it to the Taurus without trouble.

5,000 rounds and 0 problems with my taurus pt1911, i replaced the springs recently and i think it performes better than it did when it was new. i am shooting mostly 185gr lead semi wadcutters.

I own a SS PT 1911 in 9mm. Not one problem in 1200 rds, It came with 2 mags, one of which was finicky. One call to customer service and a mag appeared in the mail a few days later.

PT1911AL...I have several other 1911 pattern pistols but am tickled at my basically stock (I changed the recoil spring and sometimes use different magazines) Taurus...

...it was my foray into a lightweight 1911 pattern pistol and I am more than pleased with it, its reliability and its performance...

...I bought mine initially based on price and despite much of the internet lore that they're all junk when several people who's judgement I respect informed me differently...thus far the internet lore (based on my experience) was wrong...

I have a taurus, SA, and HK. Never have had a problem with the SA or HK. Still a crapshoot as to whether the taurus is going to feed properly, lock back on a clip with rounds still in it, or lock back on an empty clip. It has been back to the factory twice and 'they' said nothing was wrong with it. Must be my imagination. You get what you pay for.

I ended up with a Taurus PT1911 by accident a few years back, it was a gift that got cancelled. I haven't shot it all that much but it has worked fine for me. If I ever did have a problem I'd try to get it handled locally & avoid the factory.

I purchased a PT1911 last year. At the time I didn't know it would be my first of many
(have always been a revolver guy). I love my Tauras. It has the best stock trigger and will digest what ever I feed it and I shoot it well. Works for me.

Owned one for about a year and a half. Never had an issue with it. No problems with any ammo (factory or re-loads). Traded it to a friend for something else when I inherited another 1911 (which meant the Taurus ended up getting left at home a lot more because the other has more sentimental value).

Thanks guys. Every post has been very informative. Anyone who has not yet chimed in is still welcome to do so. And feel free to compare your Taurus to a 1911 of a different brand as several folks have already done. The more info the better.
Also, I am considering buying a silencer for whatever 1911 I buy, so if anyone has a silencer on their pistol I would love your opinions.

Still running 100% since the day I brought it home, not one jam or failure in any way, and I've quit counting the number of rounds it's had.

I've owned several 1911's, from Springfield Armory to Dan Wesson, and I've yet to see a reason this one can't hold it's own with them.

I've had one since '07. Mine has about 3000 rds through it and sees nearly daily carry. I had to replace the thumb safety after the original broke - it now wears a Wilson Combat safety. I also replaced the Heine sights with Novak Tritium sights after they made versions that will fit the Taurus. The only direct comparison I have is against my friends Kimber Eclipse - it is every bit as accurate as the Kimber and quite a bit more reliable. The Taurus has never had any issue with a factory round. It will occasionally hang up on one of my handloads which I blame on the handloader:) Very good value for the money - especially when they could be found in the $500 price range. For the prices they are asking today, I'd compare them against the Ruger SR1911. The Taurus is a good pistol IMO. I've read on a number of forums where they have held up well to long term IDPA use although I have no personal experience in competing with my Taurus. Based on my research at the time that it was purchased, I felt like it was the best of the moderately priced 1911s. It is certainly not in the league with a high end 1911, but I'd take the Taurus over a Kimber.

I've posted about my stainless PT1911 here before. I was considering the Kimber, but the PT had all the features I wanted for less. To sum it up, I'm VERY pleased. So far I've only run 400 or so rounds through it, but not a single malfunction -- and a lot of those rounds were really suspicious-looking handloads that jammed a customized 1911 that day. In terms of accuracy, I'll just say it's quite accurate -- anyway, it's better than I can demonstrate. All this right out of the box. Trigger pull is very, very good for a factory pistol. The action is smooth. The only complaint I had was with the cheezy plastic grips -- nothing wrong with them, if you like cheezy plastic. Replaced 'em with wood the first chance I got. Now it's one good-looking pistol!

Would I trust my life to it? Well, I would only trust a gun that has proved itself, and my PT1911 has done that. So yes, I would.

How does it compare to a Springfield? Well, I like it better than my Springer GI -- but that's not really a fair comparison, the GI is a lot more basic. If I had a Loaded I'd probably feel different. Or maybe not. A good gun is a good gun no matter who makes it, and the PT1911 (mine, anyway) is a good gun.

I bought mine shortly after they were released. I have the stainless version and I've put it through some hard treatment. Round count is at approximately 5500 right now. I've never had a problem with it. With Taurus, it's hard to cut through all the internet BS and get to the actual truth. So many stories are just repeated by people who heard from someone who heard from someone else who knew a guy, etc. Though you'll never get anyone to admit to that though.

I think I paid right at $600 for my stainless back then and I still consider it a good purchase. I'm not really aware that there are any all-stainless 1911s made with forged frames, with checkered front straps and checkered MSHs for $600 or less. Could be wrong though...

I have a PT 1911 ALR that has been flawless, although I do not have a high round count. I did change the safety from ambi to a Wilson left side only.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice. Looks like Taurus is a really good option. But I just now remembered that they don't have a commander sized gun. And I really prefer the 4" 1911s :banghead: Oh well. I guess in the future when I am looking for a full sized 1911 I will come back to Taurus. Or maybe Taurus will introduce a commander 1911 (please Santa)

Haven't had any issues with my PT1911 since I got it a few years back now. I am very pleased considering that when I got mine, there were all the same comments about it being cheap and breaking down back then, too. I have no idea if those people actually even saw a PT1911.

The Doc is out now.

for what it's worth my original model pt1911 ate several thousand rounds of my reloads with much in the way of issues. (about the same issue rate for my glock. I blame the ammo, not the guns.) It was fairly accurate. The matte black finish was not holding up very well and the ambi safety (I'm a lefty) had a couple of issues that some pliers fixed. (the fork on the peg was soft metal and spreading after a while)

I eventually sold both it and the glock for a witness elite and couldn't be happier. I check in on the guy who bought the pt periodically, he's still pleased and running it without mishap.

Rumor has it that Ruger may come out with a Commander sized SR1911 next year
That might be worth looking into. And I'll keep my fingers crossed on Taurus maybe getting into the commander sized market. Its going to be a few months before I buy a 1911 anyways

My wife purchased me a SS PT1911 two years ago for Christmas. I really like it. I was able to shoot it side by side with a Les Baer at the range (some guy I never met let me shoot it). The Les Baer was better, but I didn't think the difference in performance was worth the difference in price.

I've had mine for a couple of years with about 2000 rounds through it. All it does is go bang and send loads towards where I point it. Can't ask for much more.
The only thing I don't like are the Heinies and the cheap finish. Maybe a dark earth DuraCote in it's future.
