long story short, I went in to buy a glock 27 on january 2nd, turns out it was a federal holiday and the dealer told me he'd call it in tomorrow. I had never bought a gun here before but their prices were much lower so I decided to come here. Well a week goes by and they haven't called me back yet about anything, not even a status. I'm starting to worry and think that he never called it in. I did pay for a background fee after all. I understand due to the holiday, new ccw law applicants, and purchases the WI DOJ may be backed up but I'm starting to worry that something is perhaps wrong, should I've heard from them or the dealer by now? I'm use to the dealer calling on the spot and getting approved followed by a two day waiting period. I don't mean to be a spoiled person but was wondering if anyone from wi has had this same issue with their recent firearm purchases in wi? no i'm not a felon nor have i had any law enforcement contact involving the law recently. please tell me what you guys think... thanks.

The handgun hotline has 48 hours to get back to the dealer. Things have been a little slower lately with the new ccw, but still should not be longer than 48 hours. Have you not contacted the dealer? My guess is the background check is done, the dealer just never got back to you.

Why not call the dealer back and ask? I don't think it would be out of line.

I didn't even know people charged for calling in the background check.

I did call them back on the fourth day and they said they are still waiting approval. I also did a research on the hotline and recall it not taking this long. at most an additional 3 days. I don't want to be a prick and bother them about it so I'll wait till friday to call them again. If it still hasn't gone through, I'll call the hotline myself to verify that they did do the check. Yes I haven't noticed the first time I bought a handgun but there is a background fee.

I don't ever get an instant approval from the WI Handgun Hotline, but it's never taken more than a few hours and I have always picked up my gun after or around the 48 hour mark.

If the dealer called it in, it will get an answer within the 48 hours.

Pay a Visit

Rather than call. Go to his place of business and ask politely. Get an explanation or your money back.

I bought a new tcp 380 on jan 2 no issues. picked it up that Friday.

really? quickly after I left the store I did look it up on the phone and it was a federal holiday (new year) so I didn't think much of it. the only thing that is fishy is that it is taking longer than it should and no word at all from the dealer. I'm a nice guy but my friends tell me that you paid for the fee, you deserve a better service. Honestly if this is the service I get by saving a few dollars, I'd rather go elsewhere where my business is appreciated. I had a feeling they didn't want to help you unless you bought something there, maybe that explains for their low prices which attracted me there in the first place.

I'd call the dealer and let him know that you know that it should take no longer than 48 hours.

Did you pay for the gun too, or just the background check fee?

If you did not pay for the gun it could be they ran out of stock and are not in a hurry to give you the bad news.

I have yet to run across a gun seller who has the gun and the money and sees dragging out the deal as a good plan. They want it done as much as the buyer wants it done.

i didn't pay for the gun yet. Before the paperwork I had him confirm they did have two others in stock along with the display model. this is frustrating, I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow. Hopefully the guy who did the paperwork is in and if it's not done, I'll have them recall. What happens if you get denied? I don't see why I would get denied, my recent handgun purchase was last spring. The only major thing I did the last few month was go back to school for criminal justice and took a federal student loan, but I don't see how any of that has to do with purchasing a gun. I'll also call the hotline if they do make an excuse.

What happens if you get denied?

Other than the obvious which is you don't get the gun, they will give you the NICS transaction number (NTN) so you can appeal it, if you wish to. Or, if the state denied it, they give you a similar number for the same purpose.

well I just called them and they said I can go pick it up. Honestly I don't think I will be buying another gun from them. all they could've done was call me. poor customer service. thanks for the input guys.
