Has anyone had a similar issue? There is no reason I should be prohibited from purchasing a long gun, and I recently purhased a Glock from an FFL. I have been denied twice in two years for a long gun, but my state handgun check was immediately approved two weeks ago.

The cause was likely a unpaid traffic ticket in NC and subsequent bench warrant - which has been resolved. I am no longer a fugitive from justice in any jurisdiction.

Simply, why would the state of WI DOJ approve me for a handgun and the the FBI deny me for a long gun?

I found myself in a similar situation here in WA which, like WI, is a point-of-contact state for handguns and uses FBI NICS for long guns.

Without picking my scab again, suffice it to say that WA had my background correct, FBI did not.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, pay the $16 or whatever the nominal fee is, get fingerprinted and get a copy of your FBI record. If you find their information is incorrect, simply provide them with proof and ask them to correct the record. You can do all of this within the context of an appeal, or by submitting a voluntary appeal file application.

All this will take around 6 months most likely. Good luck.

Thanks, bikemutt. I was hoping for some good info from someone who knew first-hand.

On the positive side, I can buy all the handguns I want and get approved for concealed carry when it takes effect November 1 in Wisconsin.

I'd urge you to make sure both authorities are singing the same tune sooner rather than later. I believe WA just passed a new law with respect to CCW applicants that they have to pass a NICS check. Strange as it sounds, an applicant here could be eligible to possess according to state law, while being a prohibited person federally. In any event, when you add computers and cooperation together, the sum is likely to result in less chance of unnoticed discrepancies.
