where i go hunting a brush gun is needed.

This means a Mosin Nagant is a huge no for you. It is by no means a brush gun. Even though the carbine might be good if you are shooting from a blind, if you are on the ground with them you will want the capability to get some quick follow up shots. Follow along with what the other people you know are doing and get a good lever action

A bayonet will do you no good. If you want to stick a hog with a blade then go hog dogging and use a 7" combat knife to stab one behind the shoulder while the dogs have it at bay

I shoot .44 Mag 1894 Marlin and and a Ruger RedHawk in .44 too. Have a ghost sight on the carbine and it's real fast. Loves 240 gr. Winchester White Box. About to start reloading as this ammo is pretty pricey. Short rifles are great...Marlin 336 is great hog medicine, if you do your part. Ammo for .30-.30 is pretty cheap if you shop.

Good Luck.

I shot my first wild hog with an SKS. The second one was with a PT1911. I took my 7mm Rem Mag Weatherby on my last trip and I didn't see any wild hogs, so don't hunt with that. Mosin has real potential for a good wild hog gun. As with any hunting trip, practice with your gun before you go. Good Luck!

If you can hunt hogs with military spam can ammo (FMJ, mostly steel core), nothing will deliver the same punch as a Mosin for anywhere near the cost. Mosin Nagants can be very accurate as well. I'd be willing to bet that most people trashing Mosin accuracy aren't very skilled and that's where most of their accuracy is lost.

Regardless of the accuracy that the Mosin is capable of, it will never be a brush gun (unless maybe you bubba the heck outta one). That is what the OP has just said that he needs.

Any Mosin will work for hogs for much less than $350. A cheap semiatuomatic option is an SKS. Now for a brush gun, a Mosin is going to mostly be far too long, unless you get an M44 and possibly shave some length off of it or do something to drastically shorten the stock; an M44 has 20 inches of barrel, so you couldn't cut too much off without turning it into an SBR, and with the more weight you take off of a Mosin, the more punishing the recoil becomes. M44's also tend to be some of the pricier Mosin-Nagant rifles, going for about $300 the last time I checked. Maybe a handgun or a lever action in 44 magnum would be better suited for your needs?

You can pick up a lightly used Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70 for the money you are looking to spend. Accurate and powerful and handy in tight cover.

Wrap your hands around a Hi-Point carbine either a 4095 .40 cal or 4595 .45ACP. Plenty cheap enough and plenty short for brush hunting. It will become your all around plinking, self-defense, hog weapon. Try it you won't believe it!!

I usually use an AK-47 for hog hunting.( I normally hunt hogs well within 70-100 yards) But i always bring a some type of bolt of a more powerful caliber incase i see hogzilla lol. Usually stays on the atv though.

edit: Check out the marlin xl7s or the savage axis. those would be in your range for a value bolt rifle.

Will a .45 work as god as a 30/30?

Never for that type of work, except on much smaller pigs (under 60 lbs). A well placed shot in the head or neck with a .45 will drop a hog larger in its tracks, but for close quarters hog work I would prefer a rifle that will do considerably more damage.

For a back up gun, I will take a .45, never for a primary if I am in the brush and might walk up and surprise a pig...

The Savage/Stevens sells for less than $300.00 bucks in cal 243. 223. 308. etc & you can throw a nice BSA scope on it for less than $100.00 bucks also. & you ready for any Hogs with that setup.?

"If only the old Remington 600's hadn't recently become gold......"
Only made two years in .35 REM which is about perfect for wild Boaring in Monterey county!

These old .44mag Ruger Carbines are good to half the .35rem 600 range

In your price range finding a used Marlin 336 in .35 Rem for $250 or so makes alot of sense!

a good marlin 336 would be great to get. if i can find one for 250 it would be awesome, then i could get the mosin nagant to.. jus for fun.
but a marlin 336 used usually runs about 20 or 30 dollars cheaper than a new would.
any idea where i could find one? maybe online?

i forgot to say..... iron sights PREFERRED please. i have a rifle with a scope, i want something that would be quicker for me to line up.. most shots would be under 100 yards

hog gun

All wonderful suggestions. Surplus mauser(8mm) will work too!! about $200 bucks, spend the rest on ammo and practice.
I put a "Mojo" (ghost ring) sight on mine. love it! 3" groups @ 100 yds. great visual on close in targets too!

The 7.62x54mm delivers .308 power for cheap, but it's not a good hunting gun. That would require an actual, usable safety.

You could even likely find a Handi-Rifle for $200, possibly even new. Light, good-handling, single-shot, but accurate enough for your needs. Unlike the M-N's abomination, you just cock the HR before firing. Quick, simple, and easy.

I would also say to find you a used Marlin 45-70 and go get 'em. That is what I use and it is perfect here in the piney woods of east Texas. 18" bbl with 405gr ammo and a ghost ring sight is the only way to go.

Tony.....everything that you have said make a lever gun the PERFECT gun for what you are asking. Whether it be .30-30, .45-70, anything of a decent caliber (.357 Mag+) will work great.

M1A would be perfect. Unless you are hunting Texas style then a 22 LR pistol will be fine.

If mobility isn't a concern, then sure, why not a mousin? Set it up, knock 'em down. If it is, you can't beat a lever gun. It's lighter in most configurations and its also a self contained package; No silly stripper clips to deal with. Plenty of used marlins out there. Mossberg 464s are cheap. It's tough to go wrong if you can spring the cash in the $300 range. Used 45-70s seem to be falling from the sky on Backpage.com.

But shooting on a budget? Mousin.
