Id like to keep it as low as possible in the budget which leads me to look at the mosin.
Are there any other options other then Mosin Nagant style rifles out there?

With the price of a m44 im wondering if Id be better off taking a 91/30 to a gunsmith and having him cut it down... I duno.. Just throwing the idea out there

So THR.. What ideas do you got for me that I havnet thought up yet.

And I dont want any of the hate on modding surplus rifles thats been floating around recently.. Im not set on a mosin, but I dont know of any other 7.62x54r rifles for cheap.

Stick with the 91/30 for mods. You can get two or three for the price of an M44, plus people won't get as mad at you. :neener:

In x54r, there really isn't anything out there besides the Mosin... But it's a great rifle, so that's not a problem.

I wouldn't change a M44 or M38 simply because the prices on these have gone way up. A 91/30 is $80-$90.00. It's not hard to convert to a carbine. Buy the crowning tools and do several conversions.

Pre-bubbarized 1937 Tula I got for 25 bucks, very good bore but slugged .314". Only thing I done to it was scouted, made up a riser cheek piece, and a Wally-World slip on recoil pad. Pretty bloody accurate with wide range of hard cast GC boolits sized .316" and is my designated truck gun.

Sigh... I knew it would come up but It made it 7 posts before it did.. I think thats pretty good

RC:
The m38 is even more expensive the M44, right?

I just want a shorter barreled x54r rifle (aprox 20 inch) is all im looking to do right now.
Maybe someday put a scout scope on it if I feel the need.
After that it just depends on how I feel about the gun.. maybe a new stock.. and if I really didnt like how it shot.. Thread it for a muzzlebrake :)

M38s are much more expensive than most other variants of the Mosin because so few were made. I saw a guy at the range Saturday who had a 91/30 cut down to 16".... LOUD and he didn't look like he was having much fun after feeling the recoil.

16! holy cow thats way to short... Im even thinking 20 might be too short.

Ill have to go look at the Chinese m44s

It be cool to see a custom one with some sort of muzzle brake on the end. Wouldn't help with the noise but recoil should be softened. Too bad there isn't a Saiga in 54r, I'd buy one.

I just picked up a rusty M44 barreled actionwith matching bolt for
$15 at a show Sunday.
She will be my cheap scout build.

There is a Vepr in 54r. \
I shot an 91/30 with an 18"er that a guy at the range had, I didnt like it.
I cut my barrel down to 23"s and thats about as short as i think i want to go. Recoil is fine, but this cartridge burns more powder then a .308 and is right on the heels of the 06, so blast can be nasty.

The Chicom M44 for $150 is probably a pretty good bet right now.

If there were ever a free pass for replacing/refinishing a milsurp stock it's the Type 53's people are getting from this batch. But I think they're still fairly collectable since they're hard to find.
