So I will be loading .45 ACP for my Springfield XD 4" barrel.
230 gr. FMJ with 6.0 Grns. of Autocomp Powder.
Winchester load data shows 789 fps wich would give a powerfactor of 187.
Could I load a 5.5 grains and be ok? I want less recoil but still be able to make major PF. Thanks guys.

Are you wedded to using that powder? There are lots of others that will get you where you want to be...

I must agree with Drsfmd, there are better powders to work with for what your striving to achieve.

If you look at some of the slower burning powders you'll find they are much easier to work with regarding pressure spikes, which are common place with fast burning powders with as little as a .1 gr. or .2 gr. increment increase. And with a case the size of the 45 ACP, the smaller charges of faster burning powders can often present a position senitivity issue. This can create sporatic pressures and velocities, which can be a royal pain in the butt.

no not at all married to that powder. Just kind of trying to save money as this was local and didnt have to pay hazmat fee. What would yall recommend for powder? I was looking at the load data for Clays and it looks nice, but cant get it loaclly. So might have to bight that bullet and order online

I have to disagree, that is a good powder especially for competition. That's what it was designed to do and will keep the fouling to a minimum during the match.

Here's the problem, you will rarely achieve the velocity listed in any manual so I wouldn't count on 789 fps from that load. I would shoot it first and see if you really need a lighter load. That powder is supposed to be used for what you're doing...

Auto Comp isn't a "fast" powder,it is a good powder(its really getting into some of the slower powders), but in 45 I've had issues with it being dirty (or not sealing the case to the chamber wall)unless you can load them in the upper end. I've used it several calibers and always found it to be a good performer and haven't seen any of the "spicky" issues that others have said.

Have you looked into Alliant Power Pistol. I have had lots of success with it shooting it out of my Taurus PT-145 Mil-Pro.

According to Alliant, Power Pistol is not right for the .45 Auto. The .45 Auto is a low pressure round unlike the 9mm, 40 S&W and 10mm are.

like I said, works great in my Taurus, just throwing some suggestions out there. can't say much about the AutoComp, never tried it.

What would yall recommend for powder?

Winchester 231. There's not much that can be done with a .45 that can't be done with 231.

Bullseye and Unique are also both good, easy-to-obtain-locally options.

PowerPistol works great in my full size Springfield 1911A1. I use a near max load with 230Gr FMJs and get great accuracy, it meters great, and burns clean. Its a just a hair on the punchy side recoil-wise. It works fine for me as a common powder for 9mm and 45ACP.
