Couldn't Resist! Got a Sig 516

I came across a used Sig 516 today and the price was just too good to pass up so I had to give it a home. For a used gun it looks brand new and came with the sling original sling but no box or paperwork. I was told that the previous offloaded the gun to the shop because he had to move to Canada and he claimed that he only took the gun out once to the range and put less than 100 rounds through it.

I've wanted a Sig 516 for a while now because I've heard such great things about them but new ones cost a bit more than I'm willing to spend on one. Besides the price I've never come across one in person before used or new. I ended up getting this used one for $1,150 which is a lot less than I ever thought I'd get one for so I'm definitely one happy camper right now!

It's a piston driven AR rather than DI. The safely, IIRC, throws 90 degrees instead of 180 from safe to fire as well...maybe.
 
Hoosier is is dead on with the piston drive upper. The lower also has the rear QD swivel socket integrated to the forging / finish machining rather than using an end plate or buffer tube adapter like regular AR lowers. There are some other little nice add-ons like the ambi mag catch, and grooved surface at the front of the mag well.

A selector lever that is made to go to 180 is typically going past "SEMI" at 90 to "FULL" or "BURST" at 180. ;)
 
I like what i've heard about the 516. The SWAT department for our local PD uses 10 inch or so versions of them, hoping to get to shoot one soon. Wonder how they compare to the HK.

Edit: How's the weight? I know the HK is pretty heavy.

I've read a lot of back and forth debate over which is the better rifle, the HK416 or the Sig516. The major difference between the two guns is the style of piston. The HK has a automatic gas piston regulating system and the piston system on the Sig is adjustable.

The chief designer for the Sig team that developed the SIG516 formally worked on the HK team that developed the HK416. This is one of the reasons why people are quick to compare the two guns.

My 2¢ on the matter is this. The Sig516 is very similar to the HK416 but the 516 seems to have a few improvements over the HK and seems to be getting more positive feedback.

IMO opinion the Sig516 is an excellent piston AR for around $1,500. The HK416 (MR556A1 civilian) is an excellent piston AR but the MSRP on it is about twice the MSRP of the Sig516 and IMO the Sig actually has some improvements over the HK. Personally for the price of the HK-MR556 there are better rifles out there, or you could just buy two Sig516's:D

Sig516 Patrol: MSRP= $1,666.00
HK-MR556A1: MSRP= $2,995
 
Does it use AR milspec BCG, buffer, FCG, etc? Other than piston, any thing else not AR milspec? What is it chambered for, 5.56 or .223?

I've always wondered about them.
 
I decided to make a few changes to it. After making the changes I took the rifle out to the range for the first time and put about 200 rounds through it. I couldn't be more impressed with this rifle performed!

I added a tan Magpul CTR stock, Eotech 512, Magpul AFG and some tan Ergo ladder rail covers to help even out the color scheme.

Sweet looking rifle! I decided to get one as well. Dealer expecting delivery in June...ugh!

Good looking rifle. I've looked over the one my local wally world has on the rack and after hearing what some of you are paying for yours I'm going to have to buy this one cause they are ony 869.oo +tax for the quad railed gun a 20rd mag sling and a cheapo red dot sight/flip up iron sights. If only it was in 6.8spcII It would be perfect...... Funny thing is they have a bare bones Bushmaster for the same price..... I'm not even gonna tell you the price on the M&P .22lr it'll just make you cry if you've already bought one at the average going rate.
 
Can anyone illustrate, link to a video illustrating, or somehow explain in words how this is different in operation for a normal AR? Please excuse my ignorance here but I am curious as to how stuff works. Also, I would like to know the key benefits here. Looks like a very nice rifle. I might have to pick one up myself instead of doing a build like I had planned.
