there is an old Stevens 20 gauge bolt action shotgun in decent shape for $99 at my local Cabelas. Now, I have lots of other shotguns for skeet/trap/slugs/home defense, but I just can't stop thinking of that old shotgun! What do you think, should I buy it? I can't rationalize any real reason t buy it other than the fact that it's cool. Would you buy it???

YES!! Old guns are always fun if not aggravating at times. If you can swing the $99 do it and have fun with it from time to time, no further rationalization required.

lol ok I was really hoping that I could get one in 12 gauge, but when I looked at prices on the internet it seems that 20 gauges are substantially less than 12 gauges.

I can think of a lot better things to spend money on than an old bolt action shotgun. IF you hunt deer in a shotgun only area, and IF you get one of the new specialized slug guns, that's different, but I truly didn't think much of the old beaters.

This is also true. I hunt deer in a shotgun only area and I don't think I can shoot slugs out of the old bolt shotgun. Also, I am getting into hunting geese. A 20gauge 2 3/4 shotgun seems like it would be too weak to shoot geese with.

Don't do anything now. Think on it for a while and in 3-4 weeks if it is still available and you want it, then buy it.

I don't know about 20ga or larger, but the bolt action .410 I picked up a couple of years ago for $80 is a "Hoot" to mess around with. Not to mention a great squirrel, and garden pests gun.

If you are even considering getting into waterfowl, especially geese, DO NOT buy that gun. You are going to need all your money for real waterfowl equipment. Unless you have the decoys, the location, and the calling ability to get them in REALLY close, and are willing to spoend $3.50 up per shot for the best tungsten non toxic loads, I think the days of 20 gauge goose guns especially 2-3/4" goose guns, are over. At a minimum get a 3" used 870 or 500 if money is an issue. I do not use steel, so a 3" 12 is plenty for me, but the 3-1/2" guns and steel shells are dominating the market because most people would rather spend $1500 on a new gun and then use the cheapest shells they can get it seems.

I have decoys, blinds, equipment, etc already for goose hunting. I also have 12 gauge Autos with 3 inch chambers for heavy loads. I just thought it would be fun to bring it along with me and try to take out one of the buggers with it.

I found a 16 ga. Mossberg 190 bolt action with factory adjustable choke listed for $99 at a local gun store. My uncle had a bolt action 20 ga. when I was a kid, and I actually killed a pheasant with it.

I offered the shop owner $85 for the Mossberg 190 cash and carry. He said okay but said he would need an extra $2.00 for the transfer. I think it was worth the $87 just for the fond memories it brought back. Besides, it is kind of fun to shoot. I can work the bolt fast enough to shoot report pairs at a local wobble clays course.

It also filled a gap in my shotgun "collection" (o/u, sxs, sxs hammer gun, semi-auto, pump, rifle/shotgun combo and bolt action). Now I just need to find a single barrel hammer gun for the same or less money to complete my "set."

Just don't shoot much steel through it. Won't likely handle much steel, let alone big steel.

I had a friend back in the day that used a Marlin Goose gun 36" barrel. That thing was dangerous in a tight blind, got bopped in the head more'n once just sitting there.:D

Tell you what, you get it I will give you your money back + 10% & pay shipping.

Sounds like a project gun to me...20 ga fully rifled barrel blanks are available, drilling and tapping shouldn't be an issue...
