Had to stop loading. Ran out of MTM boxes

Ammo cans for bulk storage and Zip-Lock bags for quantities of 50 or 100 for trips to the range.

When loading on the LTC, I drop the finished rounds into 50 round used plastic containers salvaged from factory rounds. That way I know exactly how many I am dumping into a Zip-Lock bag. 100 for 9, 38 and 45. 50 for 357 and 223. Larger rifle rounds are stored differently.

Reminds me of when I got started home-brewing. I'm in the kitchen one Saturday cooking up another batch when I look in the corner of the dining room and realize I've already got 7 cases ready to drink, why am I making more?

Couple parties. Couple dinners. Couple hangovers. Problem solved.

All the best,
D. White

Enjoy burning that stuff up!
Brewing your own ammo, beer etc. is it's own reward. But only if use what ya make.

Do not order any more boxes for only 50 pieces of ammo. Go for the 100 piece boxes. Your stacks will be neater.
I had the same problem this winter, I just put 1,000 rounds in a cardboard box and labeled it. I will put them in ammo boxes when the time comes. Of course I made a few, 6000 rounds of 9mm.

I agree, 50 Cal ammo cans do a good job and then you don't have to keep so many plastic boxes around. I have a 50 Cal ammo can full of .38 Specials and another full of .45 Auto. I keep about 10X each of MTM boxes around too and fill them from the ammo cans.

Off to Midway for another order of 50 more boxes!

Are you aware that they've changed the hinges on the MTM boxes?
They are now a mechanical design and not as secure as the "live hinges" once were.
Personally I don't care for re-design and have stopped buying their boxes.

I get a headache just thinking about having to box ammo. When the akro bin gets full on the press it gets dumped into ammo cans. When it's time to leave for the range I grab a few rounds and put them into plastic bags and head out. Box ammo? :banghead:

Any time I lay hands on boxed ammo I dump it all out into a pile anyway. It's easier to load
Except for revolvers. I bought a lot of MTM boxes, myself, when I started out. Now, I only use the 357's. The semiauto ammo is easier to stow in a range bag and to load the magazines when loose in bags!

I still have about 1000 more new pieces of brass to load!

Off to Midway for another order of 50 more boxes!
Maybe my math is off. You are buying 20 rd boxes for 38 Super ammo!?

With my revo's, I can load faster grabbing them by the rim out of the MTM box by 2's or 3's.

I use these sterilite boxes from Wally World. My Piggy Back dumps them into the box. When full I pop on the lid, stick them under the bench, then fill my MTM boxes from them when empty.

Lots cheaper.

Peter, speaking as a fellow RCBS Pro 2000 loader, and knowing how quickly and easily that press runs, and how we just never want to stop loading ammo on it, I sympathize. Please send me as much of your ammo as you can and I will volunteer to take time off reloading to go shoot it. Shooting is not as much fun as reloading, but I'll do it for ya.

Thank you.

"RiceSelect" plastic containers. 'Course, you gotta like rice, but who doesn't?

I starting buying those MTM and other plastic ammo boxes when I first started reloading. I also had a friend find a huge box full of them at a yard sale once that I got off him for a song. I now just load my ammo and put it in heavy duty quart ziplock bags and write the data on the side. I put them in a .50 Cal ammo can and carry the whole can to the range. Problem solved. I realized I could buy the plastic cases for around 2 bucks a piece or go to my local pawnshop and buy .30 Cal. ammo cans for a buck a piece and have way more room in them for multiple calibers, and save a buck. I have since given away some of the plastic ones I had from years back. It makes for a much neater shooting bag to have guns in one bag and all ammo in a .50 Cal. ammo can.

this may sound a little....hillbilly, but get some new paint cans from lowes or home depot. the ones that have never had anything in them. quart or gallon size. air tight and cheap. i line mine with cardboard as a cushion. purge with N2 if for long term storage.

I don't like the MTM boxes (though I have a few) because of the hinge design. The flexing plastic just seems like it will eventually wear out. Admittedly, I've never had an MTM box break, but I've had similar style containers from other manufacturers break.

I have a bunch of the SmartReloader boxes myself - just ordered a few more of these from Midsouth Shooters Supply as they had the 9mm ones for $0.90 each. They have a more traditional hinge type that looks more durable in the long term to me.

I've also recently ordered quite a few of the Plano boxes as well, which also have a better hinge design. These are purtier than the Smart Reloader ones and stack a little better IMHO.

Of various brands I think total I've got 35-40 of the 9mm boxes and another 10-12 for 38 special. For anything I'm loading in quantity I like to have them and it just keeps things organized :).

I have dozens of boxes from various manufacturers, some actually hinged, some with the flexible plastic thing, and some with completely removable lids. Some are 20-round, some fifty, some 100. All work fine and serve to keep various loads separated, which for me is their purpose.

I also use various other kinds of containers, from ammo cans to zip-lock bags, for plinking rounds and rounds that are built from already-tested recipes. Each kind serves a purpose.
