I’m not a big fan of bear threads. Simply put, if you want to buy a new gun or carry one while hiking or camping just do so. You don’t need to justify it by pretending to be worried about bears.

There are exceptions of course.

Willful ignorance

I have to agree with popper and RCModel; questions based on dedicated and determined ignorance just crimp my donut.

The questions usually boil down to 'Please sum up your over forty years of knowledge in three paragraphs (short paragraphs with simple words) I can understand'.

Okay, if one is seeking a 'perfect powder' for a particular load in a particular cartridge, fine; What powder choices has the poster? What has the poster tried thus far? What manual or information was consulted and what is the problem? What loads have been tried and what is the expected result?

The one that gives me hives: 'I just bought a 8mm Lebel rifle and can't find ammo. I have three cases, though; so what load should I use to duplicate a .416 Rigby load and group less than three inches at six hundred yards?' The fellow at the swap meet says it's the same as .30-06. Then the poster cops an attitude when he's told 'you can't get there from here.'

Guys, I know there are new people who want to start reloading or shooting. I will be happy to share my experience with anyone. But do the courtesy of doing some reading on the subject prior to expecting all questions to be answered instantly.

Most bear threads people have decided to carry one, their question is what to get or what to use for defense against the toughest of the predators in the woods. If asking what's best for bears is bad, then asking what's best for any other situation is bad as well.

It's the "Taurus sucks!" vs. "No, Taurus are cool, you suck!" threads.
I try really hard to stay out of them. (but as a dissatisfied Taurus owner, that's hard to do)

Of the choices you gave, I picked "After the election..." because it's right on up there.

Although zombie/SHTF threads can have their downside, I also recognize that it was really Y2K preparation that really first got me to thinking about guns beyond a simple .38 in the nightstand.

It's kind of a natural progression of thought if you get into several guns, but I understand perfectly why such discussions are discouraged on many boards.

I agree with the "answering Z to question X or Y" thing.

I dislike fanboyism - any brand.

Caliber wars get tiring. A healthy discussion is fine, though.

I'm pretty flexible and not very easily annoyed. Which is good.

Blast me for this one but, thread titles with the following in it (purely personal, and I know opinions vary, guess Im just a stick in the mud)......

*lower
*AR

Wow. This thread got big, fast. I really didn't expect so many responses, but then i guess we all have a few pet peeves and it's nice to be able to express them without stepping on anyone specific's toes.

I think the election paranoia is my biggest annoyance at the moment; combined with the "2012 Doomsday" people it's getting tough to find ammo for some of my guns as people with more money than me seem to be squirreling it away en masse.

Wish i'd thought to include the "I think i want either A or B, which will meet my needs better? / You should get C, cuz you really don't want what you think you want" exchanges in the poll, because those annoy me too. LOL

I get truly irritated by posters who self-righteously, consistently imply -- almost demand -- that all gunowners, guncarriers and shooters should share the same political ideology and support the same candidates. You know who you are.

i hate when people type without using sentence structure capitals or punctuation and i go all crosseyed trying to read the post. having a big block of run together text causes eye strain and i usually just scroll down to the next post. please consider breaking your long responses into more than one paragraph. this not only helps the reader but can actually help the writer better organize their responses as well.

Isn't this portion of the posting much easier to read?

Honorable mention to the posts that have nothing to do with the OP's topic or question. Start your own thread, for Pete's sake...

Happy Independence Day!!

I chose the election scare in the poll and couldn't have said it better than Old Dog. I find gun forum posts with overtones of political bigotry and arrogance very annoying.

Bear threads, hands down.

Long range hunting ethics threads are another. Almost any hunting ethics threads, really.

If this topic were changed to "greatest bafflement" or "perplexity", it would be why people can't accept objective or even subjective criticism of one of their guns. I'm happy that most people don't prefer my types-it reduces demand and price increases.

I could see a designer or engineer being a bit annoyed, but being in a country which (so far-at least the free states) has so many freedoms, not just with guns, why does it bother people when other people point out a gun's drawbacks, or a person using less than sterling judgement to buy it? This makes no sense to me.
How a specific type of gun equals a person's identity and self-image, I'll leave this for the students of psychiatry. No kidding here.

all the "use the search" posts get me the most. my first thought is usually something to the effect of... "wow thanks for your worthless non-contribution to this thread while simultaniously upping your post count by "1". maybe the op DID use the search and it didnt answer his question, maybe all the other threads got way off topic and were of no help, maybe the op has a more specific question, maybe the answer to the op's question has changed since the last thread about it that was last posted in in 2003!?!?!?"

if all the help you can give is to say "use the search" you are not helping. please just move along and enjoy a different thread.

oh, forgot one of my biggest peeves...

you just bought a scope that is 3-9x40 not 3x9x40

bugs the hell out of me everytime...

There's quite a few on the list...

I voted for bears and zombies. I would also like to add DEER. So many guns are compared to how well they kill a deer, on this and on other forums. I know lots of people deer hunt, but seriously? :cuss: Both the deer and the zombie threads strike me as a more "polite" way of asking "What gun is best for using on people?"

Another thing is the hunting ethics stuff, as another poster mentioned. If I hunt, it means I'm HUNGRY. Shoot to kill, kill to eat. I'm not really interested in what is "sporting" or not. :barf:

As for the bears, I have two uncles who live in areas where there are bears. Lots of bears. Neither of them has seen one except at a several hundred yard distance, and as much as I've been to where my uncles live, I've never seen one at all. Reading the bear threads, you'd think these things pop up in your yard like toadstools.

The "taking our guns away" threads are irritating, but I find them so because the information contained in them is generally not accurate and is also out of date. There's plenty of things to worry about concerning our rights, but these threads typically miss the mark.

I voted other. The seemingly arbitrary or biased tendencies to close one thread and not another. There was a thread recently closed that had similar content to this, asking questions about the forum itself, or more specifically, how people view and post on here. It was closed after a few posts, but this one remains alive and kicking?

to clarify, I really don't have anything against either of the threads, but where is the consistency?

"I use .38 Spcl. in my snub .357 magnum revolver because all .357 magnum gets you is more flash and blast in a short barrel."

My chronograph says different between the 2 calibers from my 2 LCRs.

Original posters who ask a series of questions then never return to the post; some times the post is a firestorm starter but they don't chime back in.

My biggest turnoff is the snobby guy asking someone who bought gun x for <$300 what's his life and the life of his loved ones worth?. The guy says he saved for a year for this <$300 gun and the jerk tells him to save a "little" more for a $500 gun because his life is worth more than the money the guy just spent. Does that mean your life is only worth $500 when you can get a nicer gun for $800? How about the guy who spent $1000on a 1911 and the same jerk says his life is certainly worth more because he can get a better 1911 for $1500, etc. Really? Is our life only worth what we can afford to spend on a gun? Does that mean that the guy who can spend $3000 on a gun is more concerned for his life because he can afford to spend more? If a guy can only afford a Hi Point then don't go giving him a guilt trip because you wouldn't buy one. Those guys should be banned from posting.
