ran out of power pistol, loading 9mm and 40 lgs out of stock, they seem to always have hs6,aa#7 and universal clays on the shelf, any opinions on how these would work for mild target to a little hotter just in case loads?

Universal will be the most versatile of the 3 you mentioned much like Unique.

I'm a big fan of W231/HP-38 in most handgun calibers including the 9mm and 40 S&W and the stores seem to always have one or the other on the shelf.

Universal leaves unburned powder and residue all over my arms and face. The only thing I use it in is 40S&W. YMMV

Of the powders mentioned, I agree with the 2nd & 3rd posts.
Universal will work well.

Otto - If you get unburned powder, make sure your neck tension & crimp are tight.
If your under max charge, you may need to up it a bit

HS6 or Silhouette.
AA5 is excellent in both--very accurate in .40.
Haven't had as much success with AA7.
Universal has similar spot on many burn rate charts, but it hasn't been any where close to being as accurate.

HS6

I have found HS 6 to be an outstanding powder for my .40's and .38 specials. You have to be careful on the .40 caliber. Pressure spikes are a problem. Check your spent primers for burn through or stress.

#7 is my favorite 9mm powder (I usually shoot 124 & 147g FMJ or JHP but its very accurate with 115g too). Next being Power Pistol. Some people love #7 for 40 but I've not had much luck yet.

Well went in to store to make a powder choice and guess what no small pistol primer to be had went to another local store same thing no small pistol primers go figure ? are you all seeing this primer shortage as well ?? maybe will need to start looking on line for supplys

Try small rifle primers with the HS6 -- but don't buy too many of them until you know your guns will fire them reliably.

I buy 99% of my primers and powders online. And about 1% at the local gun shop just because I like shopping there (I buy other stuff there, like cleaning supplies and clips)

I think i have read that small pistol mag primers can be used with hs6 to

Small pistol magnum and small rifle primers can be used interchangeably with appropriate load reduction to start. Going from SP to SR is like using a SP Magnum primer. There isn't a primer shortage. I can't find CCI in SP or SP Magnum. But I can find all the other brands no problem.

As for the powders, Universal. I use it for heavyweight 9mm rounds. I'm just starting to use it for the lighter ones and it's working fine so far.
