Will these pictures help identify this gun. Only writing on it is defender on top of gun. Not even a caliber listed. I assume 22 or 22 short.

Defender: Trade name used by the Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works on inexpensive pocket revolvers.

Yes, most likely .22 Short.
And I certainly would not fire HV Long Rifles in it, even if they fit.
