So, anyone actually have the GSG/ATI STG44?

I see this rifle mentioned a lot, usually how much someone wants one but have yet to see any range reviews on here. Tell the truth, when first reveled I was drooling but after a long time of nothing completely forgot about it. That is until I went to drop off my Form 4 for a rimfire suppressor that arrived at my dealer and low and behold, there it was sitting on the shelf!:what:

I'm a history nut, and having an immense interest in WWII this rifle tickles my fancy in ways most would rather not know. I held it, briefly, as my dealer was busy and I was impressed. It certainly looks and feels (heavy) authentic enough, having never actually seen the real thing in person.

So for those who have one, is it reliable? I know the risks involved with military .22 lookalikes, ammo finicky and all. Also, since I really didn't have a chance to check myself, there seems to be a muzzle device on the end of it, is this rifle threaded underneath? If not does it look like it COULD be threaded with minimal difficulties?

Thanks in advance!

I can't seem to find the thread, but somebody posted a range report a couple days ago. Might have just been talking about their new rifle without shooting it yet, can't recall, but somebody on here definitely has one.

Rifle section moves a trifle bit faster than all the other forums, no doubt I probably missed a few.

BTW, does anyone know when these started hitting shelves?

I had one for a little while. Neat range toy but not very practical for much else.

Mine was pretty reliable with just about any bulk ammo I tried in it. Accuracy was good enough to bust clays with at 75 yards. Due to it's weight, it had nearly no recoil to speak of. Could just stand there drilling holes through bowling pins until my arm gave out lol. Only had one bobble with it right off, where the bolt hold open would now and then get stuck in the open position after the last round was fired. Handful of magazines in and it started working as it should. Probably just needed to wear some casting flash out of it's recess in the receiver.

The barrel is not threaded, but what you see is just a zinc casting made to look like a muzzle nut. The nut, front sight, and the barrel going back to the gas block are all one piece. The gas tube is pinned to the gas block, and the whole assembly is clamped to a thin steel inner barrel which is visible if you pop the front hand-guard off. The whole assembly on mine had a little wiggle to it in the receiver, so I doubt it would be good for anything other than plinking.

Damn, I was really hoping that muzzle nut was a thread protector. As i noted I'm currently waiting on a rimfire suppressor, so I'm kinda on a thread kick as of late. I guess I could simply cut the mock muzzle nut from that whole front faux barrel assembly, expose the real barrel and have that threaded. I little more work than I had hoped, but nothing unimaginable.

Good to hear it preformed well with bulk; that's usually a deal breaker for me if it works with bulk or not, but for this I was prepared to compromise.

Thanks for the info!

Gato, that thing's gonna look all sorts of wrong with a can hanging off the end ;). If they can thread the barrel (has to be done on a lathe, right?) they might be able to simply turn off the knobs that are molded into it, and attach there to save some barrel length (is the exterior shown part of the actual barrel/bore, or is it merely a sleeve or shroud?

Be sure to post up pics, whatever you decide to do :D

With a threaded Muzzle , that would be an MP-43, not an Stg-44, which were made with no muzzle threads. Then again, in late 45, they were useding 2nds and rejects from previous manufacturing, but thats the originals, not nessessarliy these new babys .............still 'SWEET!!, I want one!!'

Go to AR15.com. They have a GSG forum where that is all is being talked about. Its cool but not $600 cool IMO.
