I recently purchased a used Ruger Red Label 12ga for $260. Research on the serial number shows a likely production year of 1999. It's in very good condition and appears to have been hunted with a bit because of a few scratches on the metal and a few dings in the stock. The only chokes I have with it are the ones installed: Full and Extra Full. I have some additional chokes on order. Overall, it is mechanically sound and shot 100 rounds of target loads today without any problems.

So I guess I got a good deal on this one? I'm very much a pistol guy, and not very well-versed in O/U shotguns. What is the market value of this Red Label? I'm thinking I'll probably keep it for a while to have some range fun with it.

No clue what the actual value of it is, but for under $300, I can't imagine you went anywhere near wrong. Helluva deal... even crappy o/u shotguns sell for twice that; and as far as I know, Ruger never made any bottom-of-the-barrel gun. Superb find, IMO.

the stock sets alone are selling for 300 bucks. The shotguns in mint condition can be upwards of a grand. You made a solid deal

Did you by any chance have a horse called black bess and ride to york MR Turpin? :D:D
Sorry my little joke!.
You stole it basically that's an awesome deal, the Red label is a fantastic shotgun handles well reliable and well made, you cant go wrong they can handle steel shot for waterfowl and aftermarket tubes are available from many manufacturers should you decide you need them. Well done. :)

While I am not a fan of Red Labels (having had one with issues), for that price, even I would have snapped it up in a minute. Sure when you typed you didn't forget a '1'in front of that 260?

Ha! Oh no...it was $260 all right. I think the guy I bought it from just didn't know what he had. But I did have a clue and I knew it had to be worth at least double.

Actually, the guy was asking $250, but all I had was $20 bills and he didn't have change. I gave him a $10 "tip". LOL

Thats a great deal IMO. I have a 20ga RRL and if I recall correctly I bought it new about 6 years ago for $1400 or so (may have been a bit high, but at the time I had money burning a hole in my pocket). Always has done what I asked of it, especially after a few minutes of home gunsmithing to remove the auto-safety 'feature'.

You won't find too many O/U with double triggers. Older Browning (Belgian ) and older Beretta models had a few.

OP, even if it doesn't work at all, Ruger will make it right - and even if you have to pay, you'll still come out way ahead of what you can sell it for

Frankly I feel bad for the person who sold it for such a ridiculously low price. It is worth 3-4 times that much, given the exceptional wood. I hope you didn't buy it from a grieving widow who had no idea what the gun was worth.

It's not "hot". I ran the numbers through NCIC the next day and it's not stolen. And no, I didn't buy it from a grieving widow. Far from it. Just a homie who posted an ad on Armslist who didn't know anything about what he had. If he had enough computer skills to place an ad for sale, I'm sure he could have figured out how to do an Internet search on Ruger shotguns. It's not like Ruger makes a whole bunch of different models.

Nice find, although the original title should be edited to read "Bought a used Ruger Red Label box and the guy threw the gun in for free".

Wonderful score. Enjoy your new gun.

Thanks, armedwalleye. I had halfway been interested in picking up a double-barrel shotgun to play around with at the range, but I really didn't want to spend a lot of money. I was in the right place at the right time to come across this Red Label. I initially thought about flipping it to make some cash, but after having fun shooting some trap yesterday, I think I'll hold onto it for quite some time. However, sometimes I wish I weren't so OCD about my firearms, because now I have to find just the right load that patterns well, and I have to find out the choke selection that will work for me. But of course, I enjoy the process.
