Howdy THR!

Just wondering how Mossberg's 702 Plinker and Tactical models perform.

I like the tactical just for the looks. Like a poor man's M&P15-22 (I want that one too!)

I'd think this would make a great gun for the Gamer friends of mine that have never gone shooting before. Also be a neat fun gun.

I'm not really expecting good accuracy from the gun, All I really want it to do is cycle cheap ammo!

Those who read a previous thread I posted know I won't be buying many firearms related items in the coming months but I can still keep researching!

Thanks THR!

Save your money and get an M&P15-22.

Or, if you already have an AR-15, just get a CMMG dedicated .22LR upper. That's what I did, and I couldn't be more satisfied.

I have the 702 Plinkster model. Accuracy is pretty good from such a short rifle and it is both light and affordable. I'd say grab one, you can get out with one for $150 at most stores, Walmart always has them if you don't mind giving money to them.

I have one of the basic plinksters. Great little gun, handles beautifully and shoots surprisingly well over iron sights. The "tacticool" model makes me queasy... totally irrational aesthetic response, I am aware, but :barf: .

The main thing is, buy what you like and have fun shooting it often as you can.

My cousin has the "tactical" model. It is literally just a cheap plastic shell (I'm talking toy water-gun cheap) over a 702 Plinkster.

I'm with Texan Scott on this - if you want a 702, just get the basic version.

Yeah the basic plinkster is cheap and will work very well. I bought one years ago for my wife and turned out loving it.

If you're set on a Mossberg .22, definitely get the basic plinkster over the Tactical. Coming from someone who has handled and seen one perform at an Appleseed rifle class, it is a complete and unadulterated POS.

My wife had a NASTY shoulder surgery last May, so instead of the AR I wanted to get her, I got her the AR lookin' Mossberg......Cheap plastic shell , but it is real close to the same size as an AR, so I figured she would benefit starting on this as her shoulder healed(no she couldn't handle even the tiny recoil of a 223).The thing will not hold zero with a scope with out major tweaking. The magazines tend to fall out. Paid 300 for a 60 dollar rifle. Action ruff and sticky.
I am happy with it!
Lynette has gone to the range with me every weekend I have gone. Her first rifle and she is just about healed up enough for a "real" rifle. My 12 year old grandson fired his first rounds through it just a month ago. For what is was bought for,...worth every penny. ANY other reason,......EEEK!

For around the same price you can look into getting a 1022 and a ar style stock

I bought the basic model for $86. I've seen them recently for ~$110.

They don't scope well because the barrel is pinned into the receiver, not threaded. Paying for a rxr mounted rear peep sight is likewise a waste of money. When using the sights provided, this is not an issue because both front and rear sights are mounted to the barrel (ie, sight/ bore alignment doesn't change even if bbl/ rxr does). For the money, I wouldn't complain that a rifle that works as sold doesn't work well when modified.

Magazine lockup in mine is rock solid, for whatever it's worth.

I want to get a standard one because they are only 98.00 at Wal-Mart.

They always seem to get great reviews.

Btw, does anyone know if these things have hi-cap mags? I thought it did but read that the ones Mossie makes are compatible only with the 802T's

I think the 25rounders fit it... but I've never bought one and tried it, just because the preponderance of opinion online seems to be that they feed unreliably. If I had to speculate, I'd guess the forward curvature combined with the excess weight is pulling the front of the feed lips " nose down" in anything with a magazine well loose enough to allow it. If that's what you're after, the lockup with a Butler Creek in a 10/22 would likely be far more satisfactory (as it should be, at 2-3 times the price).

Again, I think as long as you're happy with the 702 as it comes on the box, it's good at the price. It doesn't "aftermarket" well or retain any sort of resale value. It is what it is... a fairly decent inexpensive 22.

I have the Brazilian CBC 7022 (the version sold by Mag Tech before Mossberg adopted it as the 702) which I bought at WalMart with three spare magazines in 1999. The gun has been a fun plinker at the range. If I had more money at the time I would probably have bought a Marlin 70, but I have not been disappointed.

The tactical shell on the Mossberg AR look-alike looks to me like it would make stripping for a thorough cleaning difficult.

My 702 goes shooting every time my daughter comes with us. It's probably had 5000 rounds through it without a hiccup.

I had one, and really just didn't like it. I had it for a few years, but it was too small, it always would fail to eject on me, and occasionally fail to feed. I couldnt go through 25 rounds without it jamming up on me, even after cleaning. I just used basic federal ammo through it. I got sick of it and traded it in for a colt ar 15 22 that was on sale (had to pay like 250 dollar difference).
