.300 Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum = SAUM

I am seriously contemplating the acquisition of an ArmaLite AR-10(T) Ultra Mag, chambered for the .300RSUM.

Other than reloading (I guess I’ll resurrect my reloading equipment and buy new dies), where would be a good place(s) to look into to buy .300 Remington Short Ultra Magnum factory ammo? (Most of the web-stores with which I am familiar are great for mil-surplus, and the more standard ammo, but not this round.)

BTW, I talked to Armalite today, and they have the rifles in stock.
From ArmaLite's site:
ArmaLite® is proud to announce the release of the new AR-10(T)™Ultra Mag, the AR-10(T)™ rifle chambered in .300 Remington Short Ultra Magnum. The AR-10(T)™ Ultra Mag is the result of collaboration between ArmaLite® and the Army Marksmanship Program in Fort Benning, GA. The .300RSUM cartridge was selected over the .300 Winchester Short Magnum because of the Remington’s stronger cartridge case, which is more suitable for use in self loading rifles such as the AR-10(T)™.

I bought one and love it. Still trying to find a place with brass in stock. I ended up buying 5 boxes of factory just for the brass.

So far it seems to be a good shooter. Still playing with loads for it and I need to get some heavier bulliets for it.

• Where did you buy the ammo?
• I'm looking for the AR-10(T) to eventually be my 1000-yard rifle. At what range have you tried yours so far (I do realize that you haven't had it long...)

MLC -
• I looked at Natchez first, as that's one of the places where I buy regularly, and found "300REM SHRT 165GR CORELOKT ULTRA", but I don't know if it is the same as Short Ultra Magnum. (These are $28/150-gr, $19/165-gr, $26/180-gr per box of 20 - I need to start reloading!!!)
• I also looked at MidwayUSA (except I have to pay MO sales Tax when I order from them!) and they listed Rem Ultra Mag, but not the 'Short' variety.

Thanks!

Alex

Nando Aquí, I think 1,000 yards for a Short Ultra Mag may be optimistic. According to Remington's site, the 165 grain bullet drops 42.6 inches at 500 yards.

The other thing with brand new cartridges is will it be around in 5-10 years? Most guys who bought a .41AE can't get ammo or brass now. Buying 500 or more cases makes this problem go away. If and when you can find 'em.

The 300 SAUM is about like a 30'06 Ackley Improved.
I think that with a 175 or 190 1000 yards wouldn't be out of reach.
People have been known to shoot .223's and .308's at 1000.
Nando, those are links I posted.
The Midway should take you directly to SAUM ammo, some is even on sale.

Yes, I looked at the charts, and was comparing cartridges available in semi-auto-rifles (Cooper Challenge?)
For 180-gr bullets, when zeroed at 200 yards, the drop at 500-yd is:
.300 RSUM = 42.6"
.308 Win = 56.4"
.30-06 Spr = 52.7

I also know that when zeroed at 600 yards, the drop drop for the .308 is 247" (over 20-FT) at 1,000-yd. I don't know yet for the .300RSUM at 1000-yd when zeroed at 600-yd.

people shoot 1000yds with .308. with the heavy 190gr bullet in the 300 SAUM, 1000yds will not be a problem. THe factor in reaching 1000 yards is not so much bullet drap as it is stability from the bullet staying supersonic out to that distance. The SAUM will stay supersonic out to 1000 yards

DPMS also makes an AR chambered in 300 SAUM for significantly less money. It has gotten excellent reviews. You could probably pick one up for $1100

Do these same rifles come in .300 WSM??-----------I wouldn't touch the Remington version with a 10ft pole----Remington lost that battle.

I agree - I also have concerns with the .300 RSUM and its availability and future.

I have looked at some of the other rounds suggested, but not many options for rifles either. I did find that SSK Indutries has an AR-10 type for the .300WSM, .300, 7mm and .270WSM - but its MSRP is $3080.

I had not looked at DPMS - that's will be the next stop.

To show you how new I am at these cartridges, what is the difference between:
(1) .300 RSUM (Remington Short Ultra Magnum)
and
(2) .300 SAUM (Short Action Ultra Magnum)

After several of web searches, to me they they appear to be the same round, but I am probably wrong.

Thanks!

Alex

There are only two new remington offerings, the SAUM and the RUM the latter being a behemoth.
As far as the Remington vs Winchester short mags.
The Remington was made to fit in their model 7, a WSM would be too long for a model 7. Remington wanted a true short magnum, like their 6.5 and .35 short mags.
They weren't intended to be compared apple to apple.

If we can shoot .223 and .308 at 1K and keep the bullet supersonic (and very accurate, I might add), the .300 SAUM will not have a problem at all. The bullets already exist for this cartridge to have excellent 1K performance, and there are more being designed as we speak. The issue, as has already been discussed, is case availability.

.300 RSUM and .300 SAUM: Are these the same?

.300 RSUM, as stated by the Armalite ad, and the .300 SAUM as discussed here.

I submitted this question to Remington but have not received an answer yet - do you guys know?

thanks -

Alex

Correct!

I just received the response from Remington -
The proper designation for the Remington Short Action Ultra Mag is SAUM.
<Now> I was able to find at MidwayUSA <AND> also at Natchez (somewhat cheaper)

Good enough -

I also checked the DPMS website - they offer:
Pantherâ„¢ Long Range Remington 300 SAUM for $1250

Any opinions about this rifle? (ClubSoda - any links to the reviews?)

Thanks!
