Is 4 milk jugs deep enough penetration for hunting humanely?

The SST is a great projectile. My last hunt I used one, but had some 180 grain left from an elk hunt so I decided to use them for my deer hunt. I hit my deer in the neck at 300 yards, took out a couple vertebrae, he didn't even twitch. Same cartridge was used on a second deer, from about 15-20 yards away on a wounded deer running away at full speed. Hit him in the front shoulder, buddy saw blood and gore fly out the other side, lets just say they didn't get much meat out of the front quarters. I had some pictures of the exit wound on my deer, but someone reported them on photobucket so they got taken down. You will do just fine with that bullet and load.

I am hunting blacktail in Juneau Alaska where shots are usually less than 30 yards therefore i shot at a comparable range.

I was just testing penetration and was asking for an opinion from shooters/reloaders that know a heck of a lot more than i do. Forgive me if what i asked was silly. I just wanted to ask before going into the woods all willy nilly with something underpowered and make a poor animal suffer.
hacker the 30-06 is way overpowered for deer. I feel bad for them after you look at wounds. a 30-30 is the best powered round up to 175 yds especially at your 30 yd range. the 170 round nose will do the job perfectly

If those are the only components you have to work with, you might want to turn down your powder charge. this will slow the bullet more into the velocity window it was designed to operate in. check around for info and look at several sources as some powders don't take kindly to being reduced. at that range i might look into picking up some 150gr jfp bullets designed for a 30-30 and work up some 30-30 copycats.
