Right now I'm looking at a glock 21, xdm 4.5", or fnx 45. I want it for self defense and home defense. The only thing I'm hesitant about is I will carry it concealed at times. Mainly hiking. That's pushing me toward the xdm 3.8" compact. I have the frame to carry a large gun. I've carried a 1911 and p220 perfectly fine before, so I'm not sure how big of an issue it is.

I like the trigger of all 3 enough to buy them. I really like aftermarket and mag availability of the xdm and especially the glock. The fnx felt the nicest by a small margin. I like the extra 2 rounds of perp repellant in it as well.

I need some experience and opinions on the matter. What do you guys think?

What have you shot the best with in the past?

If it was a 1911, stick with the XD.

If a Glock, go with the 21.

Why do you need high capacity?

If you intend to carry concealed, a single-stack is best -- it conceals better and is much lighter. If you need more ammo, a spare magazine on the other side will balance your load.

Hso- 1911 has been better by far. Thanks for the input.

Vern- I prefer a hi cap 45 because its the biggest hole in my collection. First off, I want 45 because I feel like I shoot much better with it. Also, I trust it more. I want the hi-cap because otherwise, my 1911's will fit the bill. I really want this pistol to be my reliable go to gun. Concealed carry will not be its first intent, I just need to be able to carry sparsely.

Thanks for the thoughts. Keep em comin'!

About a month ago, my wife bought an SA XD(M) 45 3.8 and a FN FNS-40. After spending time with the FNS-40, I think my next "hi-cap" 45 will be an FN FNX-45. I was considering a Glock 21, and the XD(M) 3.8 45 is nice, but I do like the way the FNs shoots.

We have a Glock 30SF and with the Glock 21 magazines it becomes high capacity; with the standard 10 round magazines it's little lighter for carry but not by a lot.

Unfortunately I live in liberal loving 15 round limiting Colorado. Otherwise....

I've been really happy with my FNP-45. It's very accurate, softer shooting than my 1911, and has 15 round mags. But if you intend to carry concealed on a belt holster, you'll need to use thick cover garment as well as quite a bit of forward cant to prevent the mag from looking like a tent pole.

XD 45 is a 13+1 capacity. PARA USA makes double stack 1911s that would be a good idea to look at if you can find their P14 before they started appealing to the $1200 custom 1911 crowd.

Another one is the S&W entry, the .45 M&P.

It holds ten in flush mags, but an extended mag holds 14

Or the Glock 21-SF

Or the XD/XDM

I would not get any of these in their compact version until I had the full size version.

If woods carry is the primary role, consider a 10mm. The Glock 20 gives you the 15 rds allowed and it, too, is available in the "SF" version to help the pointability, if that's an issue.

I liked the 4th Gen, G21 so much that I bought two of them. It is what I carry about 90% of the time, that or a G20.

Hi cap? My Colt Commander with a spare magazine!

I really wonder how many gun owners/carriers actually use their gun and then how many of those actually fired more than one or two rounds? Me? I am comfortable with my Commander and a spare mag.

since you have carried a 1911 in the past.. Why not a double stack STI or similar?

I love my full sized M & P 45 with the 10 Rd mag.The extended 14 Rd mag is a purchase I am sorry I made. It makes me feel like I have a 2x4 on my side.:banghead:

I think you need two pistols... OR a Sig P250.

For home defense - Glock 21

For CC - Glock 30 or Glock 36

OR, and I don't think enough people consider this option... The convertible Sig P250. The P250 is a great gun, but with a DAO trigger which isn't a great fit for a lot of people. Don't get me wrong, this DAO is probably one of the best ever DAO triggers.

The great thing about the P250 is that you can remove the fire control unit and insert it into a subcompact frame, a compact frame, or a full-size frame.

I caution you when you do Internet research on the P250. It came out with some bugs (what new gun doesn't?), and those have been fixed for some time. For some reason, people still hate on this gun. Frankly, I think they just read the old news on the gun and recycle it as current opinion.

I own a P250. It's my nightstand gun. It is crazy accurate. I trust it like I do any of my Glocks. My P250 has never malfunctioned. Love my P250.

I had looked at double stack 1911s at the lgs. They were a bit out of my budget so i didn't put much thought into them.

I'll skip the Sig 250. I actually have a SP2022. I love the ergonomics of it but i am an awful shot with it.

As for the m&ps, i am not a fan of their trigger. At all.

I tried lots of guns in this area. These three are the ones that fell into budget and felt good enough that i would buy. Now i just have to pick one.

For what it's worth, I stopped carrying my XD45 Compact concealed because even though it's smaller in most ways, it's a lot fatter than a 1911. My full size 1911 thus conceals WAY better than my XD. That said, I love my XD and wouldn't ever get rid of it (it just doesn't conceal very well for me, which would be true for any of the options you list).

I have a PO P-14 that is a real tackdriver and 100% reliable. It has had a LARGE # of rounds through it-many before I got it. I like it a lot.

I also have an XD with a long barrel/slide (I think they call it a 'competition' model) on it that, too, is accurate and reliable. Great gun, but I'm selling it because I just don't like it that platform as well as I do 1911's.

Options to consider. Get what you LIKE and what you are most used to. Shoot it a lot and have fun.

Conceal carry won't be it's primary function. I'm not overly concerned with the weight or concealability. Reliability and performance are my primary concerns.

If 10 rounds is enough the HK45 or HK45C are worth a serious look, plus they are slimmer than a Glock, XD, or FN. By most accounts they may be the most durable and most reliable .45ACP on the market today, and if my past HK experience is any indication they usually shoot very well too. I had a USP45 once upon a time that would give a high end 1911 a run for its money in the accuracy department. Plus you cancarry cocked and locked if you choose or try other trigger variants. My next .45ACP will be an HK I've handled the others and the ergonomics suck in comparison.

The M&P trigger is easy to tune, rivaling a 1911 trigger.

Of the remaining three, Glock 21-SF (or G20-SF) hands down.
