Who here runs a 7x57 as your primary or go to rifle.

Mine:

Winchester Model 70 Featherweight (New Manf w/CRF)
Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10 w/ Illiminated FFP MRAD
Vortex Precision Rings
EGW Base

Stock may change to a McMillan. Not sure yet.

How do you like those surplus actions?

Also I see you are in Texas Hill Country, I just moved there. I'm looking for a good Texas Dall Hunt.

My main deer rifle has been a Remington 700 Mnt Rifle in 7mm x 57mm Mauser for about 21 years now. I also shot a couple of elk with it.

Not my primary anymore, but I have a Ruger M77 in 7x57 that I've taken a lot of critters with both by me and when my Dad had it. I semi-retired it because it has the extra long throat and is only accurate with 175gr softpoints, which in factory loadings have .30-30'esque ballistics.

I've tried different bullet weights/types and powders/quantities but haven't found anything that improves markedly over the factory 175's. I can get the 175's faster but the accuracy falls way off. Anything smaller keyholes. It's plenty accurate within it's limits, but there are times I want to reach out a little farther with more confidence.

I'd love to be able to push some 140's or 139's through it but it's not in the cards... so retired. I use it as a backup and loaner now. A number of kids have used it to get their first whitetails in the trees.

i run a .30-06 on an fn mauser surplus action. i have lapped the luggs, trued the face and use a low swing safety and i really, really like it. if i wasnt alresdy running 7mm08 i would have a 7x57. I guess it depends on where your surplus is surplus from. mine was an FN mauser from a colombian cavalry carbine and it is sweet as you like.

My first deer rifle was a 7x57. I built it on an old 8x57 German Mauser. My dad thought it was important to understand all the inner-workings of one's rifle. I re-did the wood stock, glass-bedded, hot-blued the metal, and put it all together.

I've probably shot more deer with the 7x57 and the 25-06 than anything else in my safe. The 7x57 will always be one of my favorite all time cartridges. With handloads I can outperform a 7mm-08 at like pressures.

The only place I hear people talking about the 7x57mm is on the internet, where the reviews are always positive. It seems that all the people I know are into the super new calibers. If I mention it, most of my friends just think I'm talking about a 7mm Magnum. I like older classic type calibers. With a VZ-24 and a Mauser Banner action sitting on my reloading table right now, I am seriously considering building one of them in 7x57mm. I might even put a full length Mannlicher type stock on it when I do.

I've had guys at gun stores argue with me about what ammunition I was looking for. Once at Cabelas and once at Dicks. Cabelas listed some PPU in stock while I was there getting some other stuff, but the guy in the gun section that offered to help me kept grabbing 7mm Rem. He flat-out told me that I was obviously new to shooting and I needed to listen to him. I had a talk to one of the managers and the guy doesn't work there anymore. That was about 2 years ago. When I went in to the new Dicks in town, I got the same type of treatment, but without the insults and condescension.

I shoot a sporterized Mexican Mauser as one of my main guns. The stock is a cheap ramline that needs to be replaced, but I put a pillar in for the rear action screw and it shoots much better now. It accurate, recoil is managable if not downright pleasant, and it's relatively cheap to reload for.

My main hunting rifle is in .275 Rigby, also known as the 7x57. Just because I like being odd when I had it built I had the caliber engraved as .275 Rigby or 7X57. It's built on a VZ24 action.

I believe that the term "runs" is associated with the black rifle crowd. Personally, I "HUNT" with my Winchester Featherweight chambered for 7X57.
Usually, one shot "plop".

7x57

I got interested in 7 MM calibers because of all of the glowing reviews and articles on the 7x57. I ended up with a 7MM08 when they 1st became available. It is no more than a 7 MM loaded the way a 7x57 should be with factory loads and available in a wider variety of rifles. I would just as soon have 7x57 since handloads are all I shoot. It is a very good caliber or it would not have lasted 100+ years and been used on all game up to and including elephants!

CountGlockulla.....not to threadjack, but how do you like that Viper PST FFP? I'm thinking about it for .280 or .30/06 I'm about to build.

To keep this on topic....I've been kicking around the idea of a Ruger No. 1 RSI in 7x57, mostly because of the excellent reviews the cartridge gets. And it's a pretty rifle....

The Viper PST is great and offers a lot of features for the money. Great glass, turrets are very tactile, rheostat illumination control is nice, the reticle is usable throughout all ranges, and I like that it comes in MRAD. As a hunting scope you may find that the low range reticle is a little fine and the exposed turrets may worry you, however, for a dual purpose target/hunting scope that is compact and lightweight I think it is a great value.

Pistol Ranch-

What ammo do you use most in your M-70 Fwt.? Is the chamber made for the 175 grain bullets?

I hate you. (not really) I bought a r700 Mountain Rifle for myself when I was in 8th grade, with the paychecks I earned reffing soccer.

Two years later my parents got divorced, and my mom didn't want guns in her household. (And there was no question that I was staying with her over my dad who was cheating on her.)

I never saw the rifle again.

My main hunting rifle has always been a 7x57 built by my grandfather on a Mauser G33/40 action. It has either a douglas or a P.O. Ackley barrel on it. Everyone who would know for sure is long gone now.

I have killed 3/4 of the deer I have killed with that rifle. Of course I reload for it. You have to. My main hunting load is the Hornady 154 spitzers that get 2725fps on average from my barrel. I also shoot the Speer 115 hollow points and the 130gr spitzers. The best part is is that it shoots all these loads to the same POI at 100 yards. Most of the groups average right around an inch and a quarter. Sometimes smaller.

I see that winchester has the model 70 featherweight in 7x57 available. I want one realy bad. I just bought a Ruger MKII 30-06 and as soon as my gun budget recovers I may have to get the winchester 7x57 rifle.

I have a stock 1895 Chilean Mauser in 7x57mm that I've had since the early 1990s, which I bought mail order from Sportsman's Guide for just over $100. Once the surplus ammo started to dry up, I started reloading for it ... which was what got me back into reloading after a few years hiatus. I wouldn't call it a "primary" or "go-to rifle," but I do still love to shoot it, especially with handloads. Never killed anything other than paper with that rifle. Great shooter, though, when I do my part anyway.

Lone Star: I handload 145 grain Speer bullets. I bought my Featherweight when the were new on the market and still made by Winchester (Before U.S. Repeating Arms). I loaded 50 rounds, sighted in and have not used up the first 50. The rifle has probably accounted for 20+ deer on my ranch.
I will post a picture when I get home from work today.
To answer your question, I have no idea if the rifle is throated for 175 grain bullets. For the heavy stuff, I use a Marlin 1895 and shoot 405 grain handloads or my Ruger 7 mag.
