Well I made a knee-jerk decision and bought a used Ruger #1 in 6mm with a red buttpad at a gun show yesterday from a guy walking around looking to sell or trade. I paid $700 and I'd call it 90% condition.

I probably overpaid, but I can't find one for under $800 and most of them are calibers that are too small to hunt with. So I paid up.

Now I'm wondering what kind of ammo to use for it. My first deer rifle was a 243, by that was a long time ago. I have no idea what grain of bullet to use. My hunting is less than 150 yards and deer are average size. No monsters or anything.

So can you all remember a factory ammo that I could use until I get enough brass to reload my own? Or would I be best to sell or trade this one for one in a bigger caliber?

so do you want a bigger caliber for some reason? If you do, that's up to you. but I'm sure you know a 6mm will kill deer all day long...

$700 for a #1 like you describe is not overpaid, they don't seem to loose much value. I love my No. 1s, looking for one in .257 Roberts (almost impossible) and a .308.

I had always wanted a 25-06, but I know the 6mm will definitely get the job done. I just know that it and the 243 are considered by many to be the smallest caliber to use on deer. I just want to make sure I get the best possible ammo. All the threads about the 243 make we want to get the best possible choice for ammo of I'm going to carry the gun.

6mm Rem is a great cartridge. Very similar to the .243 you're used to, but with a slightly larger case with a longer neck. You should have a 1:9 twist so can shoot a 100 grain bullet handily. Very lethal on deer in your range. Use SGKs or bonded core bullets.

Check out IMR 4064 powder, and a 95 grain Nosler Partitian for a hunting load. It worked very well for my 6mm. You found a nice rifle!

Great rifle and great caliber!

The 6mm Remington will hammer any deer you will ever come across with any of the 100 gr. factory loadings. Just pick one and go see how well it shoots...

85 grain SGK BTHP and a middle of the road charge of H380 will put them in the dirt with a quickness. It's our favorite .243 load and I'm sure it will do just as great in a 6mm.

Congratulations on acquiring a beautiful rifle, in a great caliber, but unless you have an LGS who stocks the ammo, you probably need to stock up on some factory ammo if you can, because it's getting hard to find at the usual places on line. Most are out of stock, and many manufacturer's are only making seasonal runs of that caliber.

My choice for factory ammo would be the Remington 100gr Core-Lokt because it's usually a reliable load, and seems to be the most available at this time. Try a box and see if it shoots in your new rifle, if you can find it. I think Midway shows it in stock right now.

Another vote for the 85gr SGK hpbt, and the 95gr Nosler Ballistic tip. Those are the two bullets i'm using in my .243 this deer season based on all the good reviews I've read.

Texas Patriot I know where a #1 in .257 Roberts can be found. pM sent.

I think that is a fair deal. Use the 100 gr bullets.

Love my Ruger #1 in 6mm. It belonged to my Dad. Only problem I have is finding a load that shoots well. I haven't put much effort in that endeavor yet. However, The rifle stings shot laterally giving about a 3" group at 100yds. The shots are perfect elevation but, look like a series of periods. . . . . . If I can get them to group together it should be a "tack driver".
Beautiful rifle, absolutely beautiful!

I use 100 gr. Winchester ballistic tip, but that's in .243. I don't know if you can find that in 6mm.

Ah, highly desirable with the red pad and 6mm. One problem is if you don't reload, ammo is not readily available as 243. Must be the lower demand for higher ammo price. The 7mm Mag Remington Cor-Lokt is $10 less THAN the 100gr 6mm. With the high rpm, you don't want to center punch the shoulder or rump roast, makes pureed meat instantly. My 6mm is the Rem 742 "Assault Rifle" and I could see more meat damage THAN with my 300 H&H.
